My DD told me today that she saw dead mice and poops. According to her, they are seen throughout the school. I am really freaked out after hearing. Is it common in the US?

Might we know which school? |
There are mice in the US. I don't know the total mouse population but I suspect they are across most, if not all states. There are even rats in some places, including many places in the DC metro area. However it is not common in this country to have schools littered with dead mice. I suspect there is some exaggeration on the part of the kids. If they are dead it probably means they are poisoning them somewhere. So presumably the school is aware of the situation and is working on it. It is not uncommon for mice to come inside in the winter - we've had them in our house before.

Maybe the mice want to learn to read and write? |
And the everywhere else on the globe... |
I have mice in my school (at least I picture cute little mice and not giant cat-sized rats). I also don't have heat that works all of the time and we can't drink the water b/c of lead. And the ceiling leaks too. Can't wait to see what my classroom floor looks like tomorrow after the rain tonight. Welcome to education in America! |
You can't keep mice out of a large building. They come in through open doors or any other way. They are looking for food and to get out of the cold.
If she saw 100 mice then that would be a problem. One mouse? Not a problem. |
Yes, common in the US. If there's food, there will be mice. |
Agree. Teacher in FCPS and we, too, have mice occasionally in our classrooms or see their droppings. |
I was once going through the lost and found pile at my kids' school in APS, and found mice droppings in some kid's lunchbag. I told the custodian, but aside from that, what can you do? Schools have anti-rodent service contracts. |
OP here. Thank you everyone. I did not know it is common. But are there any health concerns? |
A favorite classroom interlude is for a mouse to run across the floor. All of the girls scream and stand on their desks and yell, ewwwwwwww!!!. The boys remain seated or try to catch him. |
I had a mouse in my classroom. It was gross and the kids freaked out. But they got an exterminator and it was disposed of quickly. Happens a lot when the kids or teacher has good in the room. I'm sure the school is working on getting it taken care of!! |
It was "gross"? Give me a break. It was a small rodent. If a cat had run across the floor would you think he was "gross"? I'll bet that the kids freaked out because you freaked out. |
