4 month old with dry itchy scalp

Anonymous
Hi-
My 4 month old who happens to have eczema also has dry, itchy scalp. Does anyone know how to treat this? I'm not even sure if it's related to her eczema. I am concerned of the scratching because it's been happening more often. I use the Burt's Bees baby shampoo every other day. I was thinking that it may be cradlecap but I heard that cradlecap is not itchy. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

It sounds like cradle cap. Normally, the best thing for cradle cap is to let them outgrow it, but since yours is itchy and scratchy, you might want to treat it. My suggestions:

First, cut out Bert's Bees and go to something more common, like J&J. There is a chance that something in the Bert's Bees bothers DS.

If that doesn't work, use Selsun Blue. It is a common remedy for cradle cap. Doctors will readily recommend it for those who don't want to wait or can't wait for the baby to outgrow the cradle cap.

Last, since your baby has eczema, you may want to talk to your doctor. Cradle Cap is a type of eczema.

my son had cradle cap at 5 months (as well as eczema). we took baby shampoo and rubbed it into his dry scalp, then took a gentle baby comb and combed it out. it worked like a charm and hasn't reared its ugly head in 8 months (he does have an occasional flake but it's not a big deal). we tried olive oil, too, but that didn't work as well for some reason.

i'm glad that it's gone now b/c, at 13 months, there is no way in hell he'd sit still to have his scalp combed out.

My daughter had it at 3 month and she also develop eczema.
Combing her hair after washing it removes the dry skin.
It is related to the eczema as it is a dry skin condition and actually can make the body eczema worse as the skin can react to it.

Since then we started oiling her hair (and her entire body) before washing them with Aveeno body wash and put Aveeno body moisturizer on her scalp too. From then n her scalp has been perfect.
We recently started using coconut oil (found in South Asian stores) on her hair and body before the bath and it has been working great!

I am the last poster. Coconut oil works so well because it is incredibly fatty much more than olive oil, almond oil, baby oil or anything we used before
