medication for child with anxiety and ADHD

| My daughter (8) has generalized anxiety and ADHD (primarily inattentive). We have tried many many therapies and different approaches but reached a point when we turned to medication for the anxiety because child was not really functional. The difference has been nothing short of remarkable. She still has a fair bit of anxiety but is able to participate in activities, interact with people, go to school, and deal with her feelings. However, the ADHD is only becoming increasingly obvious. We have been very nervous about addressing it with stimulants as they are known to increase anxiety but decided to try since the attention issues are affecting her so much at school and probably themselves a source of anxiety. However, the med trials have not gone well. The stimulants have indeed caused overwhelming feelings of anxiety, much like the old days. We are working with a good psychiatrist who has suggested strattera as a possibility. But I haven't read anything very good about strattera and have read some disturbing things. I am wondering if any parents with similar children have any thoughts or advice. Thank you in advance. |

| My DD fits the same profile and she is on strattera. It works well for her and it can help anxiety. |

We didn't notice any change in DS with Strattera (benefit or otherwise) Are considering Intuniv. Currently taking 40 mg of Vyvanse for the ADHD. Helps a lot.

I don't really know anything about Vyvanse. I'll look it up. And you are looking for something in addition to the Vyvanse, not to replace it? Thank you for your help. |

| My DS, who also suffers from anxiety and ADHD, uses Focalin XR. |

DS was taking Adderall XR and we had added the Straterra to it. Then discontinued. We've since switched to Vyvanse and have seen improvement on the ADHD front, but yes, am looking for a possible add re the anxiety. |

| DS has been taking both Celexa and Ritalin since he was 10. |

| My Dc has been taking Strattera ADHD for a number of years. It helps quite a bit and also helps with some of his anxiety. We tried a stimulant (Daytrana patch) at a very low dose and he started having tics right away and then hives fromhis knees to his neck. We stopped it within a week. He hasn't had any harmful side affects. I have heard that most of them (like psychosis) happen when the dose is too high. I do have a friend whose son could not tolerate it and whose personailty changed completely. So, if you try it, pay careful attention. |

| I forgot to add that since DC had such a bad reaction to the stimulant medication he cannot go on any other stimulant. |
