Non-custodial parent non-payment enforcement in MD

Anonymous
My ex owes appr. $1500 in unpaid child support. He hasn't paid anything since October. Do I have to call up MD Child Support Enforcement for them to take action or is this something that will automatically happen once he is in arrears a certain amount?

How does he pay, directly to you or through the court? I don't know how MD works. Even if you get great responses here, it can't hurt to call.

It isn't easy to talk to an actual person there. I only get 30 mins for lunch and most days, I am on hold the entire time. He is paid cash at his job so he just sends money to MD Child Support when he has it. Then, they deposit it directly in my checking account. He always has a million excuses so he hasn't paid in months.

They should flag it after several months but should is the key word. What county are you in?

I just found out where he is working so I might call them with that info. He gets paid under the table so I would like his employers to be contacted so that they know they are required to attach his wages.

Whoa OP not sure contacting his employer makes sense. What if they fire him because they don't want an employee who deals with family court in their midst? Can't you take a half day off work, or a few hours, to go to the court?

OP here. I didn't mean that I would contact his employer but that I would contact Child Support Enforcement in MD with that info. Employers are required to garnish wages from their employees.

Right but if he's being paid under the table, reporting him could backfire and he could be laid off, the company may not want the court meddling in their business. If he got laid off, he would owe you nothing until he got another job (except back child support). Maybe go to court and research what would happen if you reported him to CSE and use that to negotiate to get him to pay up?

Good luck. So frustrating!

that is true, but if he isn't' paying her anyway than what does she have to lose? Besides, what the company is doing is illegal and it would be a matter of principle for me at this point.
