Question for the docs on here, what's it mean to have an 850 triglyceride level?

Anonymous
I know it's high, but in laymens terms what does this mean? Also there was an elevated urine microalbumin level
We don't eat very bad, for example we have pizza once a week and bacon and eggs on Sundays but thats about the worst of it
We eat home cooked meals the rest of the nights and that usually is some type of broiled fish, rice, veggie with no butter, etc
Lunch is usually a turkey sandwich, maybe Fast food once a week at most
How is this treated?
I'm going back to the doc this week but I'm really worried

First, I am not a doc.

Second, you are going back to see your own doctor, which is the BEST thing you can do.

Third, drop the fast food entirely. If you feel you must, get a SALAD. No Fries.

Do you exercise? How often? If not, you need to. Should be at least 3 times a week, if not 4 or 5. Even walking 20 minutes a day helps a lot.

My expectation is that you'll be placed on a diet, which includes exercise, and possibly given an Rx for cholesterol levels if diet/exercise doesn't make enough of a change in 6 months.

Not a doc, but this sounds like a kidney issue to me, with the elevated microalbumin in the urine. Irregular kidney function can also lead to elevated triglycerides.

Do you have diabetes? Was your blood sugar tested? Was it the three month test (not hour, but month)? I'm not sure what it's called, but I'd have that checked as well.

The other thing I'd watch is blood pressure. From my relatives' experience with all of these, they can be treated well with diet, exercise, and sometimes drugs. Good luck, and stay in touch with the doc.

Am I missing something because that number seems so off the charts that I think you've misread it or its a mistake. With that kind of number the doctor would call you, not wait for an appointment. It sounds like lab error to me.

Triglycerides can also be genetic and not solely based on nutritional intake. My whole family has problems with high triglycerides regardless of their activity levels/ what they eat.

Did they check your cholesterol too?

Did you fast before the blood test?

I did not fast before the test, and I have not been exercising lately
I had another test this morning, fasting, so hopefully that will be more within a normal range
I'm thinking it mat be genetic, based in what I eat and I am not large (I'm a size 4) and Im not unhealthy or sedentary

If you have elevated Triglycerides, talk to your doctor about taking Lovasa (a prescription strenght fish oil)....

If you didn't fast, its pretty worthless. Hold off before you get excited until they do a real test. They shouldn't have done it at all if you didn't fast.

14:14 is right. If you didn't fast the results are meaningless. Your doctor should have told you this.

Another vote for fasting is imperative for the cholesterol test. They shouldn't have done it at all. All this worry for no good reason.

Thanks! I have no idea why they didn't tell me to fast before the initial appointment.
Maybe because they can bill twice for the test?

It means your bloodtype is Ragu.

They should have told you, but most docs/nurses assume everyone knows.

Now you know. Or know to at least ask "Is this a fasting test?"
