What's your take on Pastor Rick Warren (Purpose Driven Life guy)?

I'm not religious, but I've seen short clips of this guy on CNN and I thought I'd read his books. Just starting them now and wondering what people generally think of this guy. He's obviously quite successful. He seems pretty mainstream... but maybe I just don't know the details on him.

What do you think?

I think he is an evangelical, fundamentalist, conservative Bible-thumping Christian and I pretty much disagree with his views on every major topic.

I read his book and thought it was bland pablum for the masses.

Not a fan. But not a fan of any evangelical.

Annoying as all get out.

He's a good guy and a positive role model for people who feel lost/disconnected. I'm not an evangelical but I respect what he's trying to do. He's not for everyone. Probably not for most here.

I met him when he was a guest at Harvard. I was taking a class from Robert Putnam (the "Bowling Alone" author) and he was a guest speaker. He was straightforward about us not really being his target audience, but handled difficult questions with grace and emphasized the importance of trying to turn around the dissolution of community in America -- preventing us from being "alone together." His version of how to do that involves God.

An average day on DCUM will show there's something to his perspective on the problem. And no one here seems to have a better answer.

Seems like a very nice guy. A little whiney-voiced, but I still enjoyed him.
