Since the pandemic, I've been working from home at least two days a week (and five days a week for the first couple of years). I would estimate that at the four-way stop sign next to my house in upper NW, at a quiet intersection without much traffic, maybe 50 to 60 percent of the cars come to a complete stop before proceeding through. It's a higher rate when multiple cars approach at the same time, but it's not 100 percent. (I actually think it's more like 20 or 30 percent who stop, but then I decided double it just to be conservative for the sake of this discussion.) That also counts as "blowing stop signs," so I hope you're calculating that in your rate? Cars that exceed the speed limit are also breaking traffic laws; obviously, that's a very, very small percentage of all car trips, but even still, we've got to count them, too, if you're comparing bikes and cars. |

Don’t forget that old saw about how cyclists are more likely to be white, more likely to have higher incomes and more likely to live within biking distance of their jobs so closing roads like Beach to cars benefits them and disproportionately hurts black and brown people who drive because they’re commuting from much greater distances. Oh wait…that one’s true isn’t it? Sorry teachers, cops and other government employees. Maybe you could save up and buy a place much closer in, near the cyclists? |

I'm a teacher who bikes to work every day. 8 miles each way. I bought a bike new for $500 ten years ago, so I spend $50/year on transportation. Good attempt though |

All the available research shows cyclists in DC are overwhelmingly white and that drivers are disproportionately black and brown. So, yeah, closing roads to cars benefits a tiny number of white cyclists at the expense of a far larger number of nonwhite people. Yet another white privilege. |

It's a convenient way to get to an office job if you're driving from the northern end of it, because who cares if you have to drive uphill out of the park to get where you're going. But for people who live near the park and bike to work downtown, it's much more convenient to just take surface streets. |
