Swim Team Drama

Team Rep here. If we are preparing to start a meet and are still short timers or marshalls or something I'll walk up to a parent and say "hi, looks like you aren't volunteering again, glad you are able to be here. Here's your watch/vest, please report to the deck."

We absolutely know who shows up but never does anything.

Funny, if you’re our team rep, you do this to people who HAVE volunteered but you didn’t notice. And yes, they resent you. So do be sure to notice and thank the grunts. Not everyone volunteers on deck, or even bothers putting their name on the sign up. They show up and do what needs to be done. Including being bossed around by you. Just venting here. It’s probably up not you.

Brilliant!

So if the parents don't volunteer, their kid(s) don't get to swim? If this is part of the summer swim team contract, that's fine. If it isn't, then you're going to lose members. This can hurt the team if the kid(s) are fast swimmers but the parents can't/won't volunteer.

It's pretty much spelled out on the first page of parents' volunteering requirements. You must not have a kid in a swim team. This is summer swim, not high school sports. Swim parents don't care, there are more opportunities for other swimmer to step up.

The summer team was coached by two high school senior girls, who were also the head lifeguards of the pool. They were terrible bullies and caused drama all summer long. One was a board member's daughter and one was the swim rep's daughter, so they did whatever they wanted and there were no consequences.

It would be a cause to start a mutiny. Since the swim team and the pool are separate, I wouldn't worry about the board member. I would talk to other parents to recall the swim rep for the next year.
