They are failing for social issues. Who goes to school in Baltimore City? The vast majority of students live in poverty and experience everything that comes with it. Unstable homes, food, parenting, etc. You can’t build upon this shaky ground effectively. |
Some of them do, sure. But in MCPS, in elementary school, only 43% of all students (grades3-5) scored proficient on the math test last year. So wouldn't you say the majority of elementary school students do NOT do fine with these questions? |
DP That's the broader point. These test questions are not well suited to young children in any city or district. Cognitive load theory argues for putting limited demands on working memory for students of that age, with emphasis placed on learning facts. Once a knowledge base is in place, then increase emphasis on development of conceptual understanding. This approach is particularly important for struggling students but the worry is that this is not the approach in use -- the convoluted test questions likely imply classroom instruction puts equally heavy emphasis on conceptual understanding. To try to improve Baltimore and other cities/districts scores, there needs to be a review of the Common Core approach. |
I mean remember when everyone was dissing Kamala because she was enforcing truancy laws an an AG in California? Yeah. Truancy laws should be enforced. |
But democrats could seriously address the 23 schools at issue here, beginning by firing all the failing teachers and administrators- who are failing generation after generation of these primarily African-American children. Democrats won’t act, however, because they are addicted to the money-flow from teachers unions. So in 10 years, these 23 schools will still be failing Baltimore’s children, and perpetuating all the problems which stem from poor to non-existent education. Democrats retain 100% political control in Baltimore. It is their city; their problem. |
It’s cute that you think teachers are the problem there. |
There is already a lawsuit underway to figure out where all the money is going in Baltimore schools. They’re basically the most expensive students to educate in the entire country and yet they’re achieving the worst results. Discovery will be interesting. |
You mean this lawsuit? That was seeking MORE state funding (?!?!)? https://www.thebaltimorebanner.com/education/k-12-schools/court-rules-against-education-advocates-seeking-more-funding-for-baltimore-city-schools-VL3VPXFEIRENNGXXALVZDDELIQ/ |
So advocate for intact families, no kids before marriage, work to put in place policies that disincentivize kids having kids. Don’t give them free apartments when they get a child. Start being part of the solution. Vote accordingly. Don’t just keep making excuses. Your excuses are keeping these people in poverty. |
+1 You won't fix this problem with school when it's rooted in the home. |
+1. I'm sure some of them are bad teachers, but can we also fire a lot of the parents too? |
I used to repo cars in Baltimore. On North Avenue was the city schools admin building, and the lot was FULL of luxury SUVs; Lexus, Mercedes, etc. The union promises every teacher a $100,000 / year job as an “administrator” if they put in just 10 years in the classroom. That is where the $$ is going: do-nothing administrators. |
Yes, better for the kids to be homeless instead once they’re already born. Sorry kids, you chose the wrong parents! |
You’re medieval. |
This is the problem in math and reading in this progressive state. Force everyone in the same class for the sake of equity but then kids not actually get what they need. |
