New pre-k3 programs at SWS for city-wide lottery - Awesome!

Anonymous
Just heard that SWS (moving to Prospect Learning Center on the Hill) is adding 2 pre-k3 classes and it will be a CITY WIDE LOTTERY! Woohoo. Maybe some non-Hill residents will finally get into a decent 3 year old program!

They didn't have a pre k 3 program last year so the pre-k 4 programs are also city-wide for the first time ever.

Legitimately curious: are there families out there who will commute across the city on a daily basis with their 3year olds for the Sws program? Or will it mostly draw close in families, remaining a defacto neighborhood-like school?

to the PP, its a question I am facing. We live in Ward 4, lots of charters and nearby oob choices for us. We would really have to figure out how to deal with the commute. I want the best for my kid--and that includes a sane schedule and what's best for the family. Ideally, he'd be in a nearby school that our non-driving nanny, taking care of the baby, could pick him up from at 3:30 or whatever. If he were at SWS, de facto he'd be in aftercare until 5:30, which is a long day for a 3 year old.

What do you mean by "city-wide"? How were they not open to OOB students before?

I guess OP means that there is no in-boundary preference? more like a charter? I don't see anything specific on website.

they were - there is no longer in-bounds for SWS

Will they offer pre-3 for 2013-14? I can't seem to figure that out.

That's still TBD, but there will be clarity within a week. There will be sibling priority, and there may be proximity.

PP with update -- DCPS has communicated to SWS community that it will be citywide in 2013-14 with proximity preference. Review of boundaries will be part of comprehensive boundary review next spring.

That covers not only PK-3 and PK-4, but any avaiable space due to attrition in K, 1st and 2nd.

^^^^PP. I think you maybe made a typo. It will be citywide "withOUT" proximity preference for 2013-14 unless things changed since Friday

PP again You're right -- and I did make a mistake -- I meant to say there's NO proximity for 13/14 .
