Auburn School in Silver Spring

Does anyone have a child at the Auburn School in Silver Spring?
We are considering this for DS with ADHD and LD.

Great School. Excellent support for LD and ADHD.

Mine is in Herndon. I am very, very happy with the school.

DS has both ADHD and LD and attends The Silver Spring Auburn. We are extremely happy! Let me know if you have any specific questions !

OP here -- thanks all. Where do kids go after 8th grade?

Depending on where you live and work you may want to also look at Compass Academy in Halethorpe, Maryland (within an easy walk of the MARC train which one of my child's classmates uses to get to/from school).

Compass Academy is a 1-12th grade private school for students of average to above average cognitive ability with ADHD, LS, HFA and other learning or social issues.

There are at lest two students who live in Silver Spring whose parents have decided that Compass Academy is worth the drive up I95 each day.

Last year kids (not all 8 th graders) moved onto public schools , one to The Commonwealth Academy one to The Barnsville school and one to The Asperger Program at Ivymont .

OP- Auburn is geared most specifically to children with Aspergers and HFA, and does a good job with that population.

FYI - there is a high school at Auburn in Herndon where my child goes. Quite a commute but may be worth looking into.

Not the OP, but wondering what kind of LD your son has. I suspect that my DS has dyslexia and possibly dyscalculia. (We're going to get tested to confirm.) Just wondering if they can handle this kind of LD. Thanks.

It sounds like your DS might be better suited for Auburn's sister school, Siena. They work with children who have language issues and ADHD.

Can anyone provide any review of the Auburn School for the last 2 years? My son is entering 1st grade and was recently diagnosed as HFA. The price tag is pretty steep so unsure if we should take our chances with the public school.

I have a child around your age at Auburn in Silver Spring. If you contact the admissions director at the Auburn campus you're looking at, they'll put you in contact with a current parent. We are very pleased with the school and plan to return next year.

Auburn's website keeps an updated list of (at least some of) the schools and universities that Auburn students transition to when they age out. https://www.theauburnschool.org/afterauburn

Considering Auburn - coming from mainstream where DS with HFA does okay, but is always an outsider. Is it better for to continue in mainstream and be forced to interact with neurotypical peers if he can cope, or to go to Auburn with much more support, but no integration?
