Hi! We have a three-year old who has sensory processing issues, and we've been working with him on potty training. He seems to strain a lot when having a bowel movement, and doesn't always finish on the toilet. Even with a diaper or pull-up, it seems to take him a while to poop, or he has several small ones during the day. We think there's some withholding/control stuff going on as well, but we'd like to begin by addressing the physical part and making it a little easy/pleasant for him to go. Anyone have ideas on ways that I could incorporate things into his diet that will soften his stool? He's quite regular, it's just difficult for him to finish all at once when he goes. He eats a lot of fruit, not much wheat or dairy, and a pretty decent diet overall, which is a start, but what else might help? Are there foods that I could be giving him that are causing him to be constipated? Help!
Thanks in advance! |
| We have good luck with Gerber brand pear juice. No other brand has worked as well. I'm not a fan of miralax type things and we have had good luck with this so far. |
| Not ideal but we give our toddler theFiber One brownies. He loves them and the additional fiber has seemed to help. Plus lots of water. |
| Prunes |
| We use a probiotic powder (I think called flora baby) in some pear juice. It has done wonders for my 2.5 yo. |
| Raw beats and carrots, prunes. |
+1 |
| My DS likes the prune smoothie pouches, which I think are an easy way to get them down. Also, fig newtons have the same effect. |

Brownies made with prune paste (lekvar) might be an option.
Remember that all of this stuff works by irritating the gut. Use laxative foods as lightly as possible. |
| Grapes. Miralax works! |

Prunes.
Both my children dislike the processed varieties (juice, puree, etc) more than the actual fruit, even though it can be tough to chew. We cut one prune into fourths for our 2,5 year old. Chocolate, rice and carrots constipate! Beets are excellent, but my children hate them. |
| Pear juice works the best for us. It's the only juice DS gets. |
