AAP Expansion proposal and Lorton Station ES

Anyone know more about the Lorton Station ES portion of the AAP Expansion proposal?

It appears to me that the Lorton Station AAP Center (currently at 250 students) will be really hurt by this proposal as there will only be a single class (33 students) per grade level, with the new Silverbrook center having two classes (65 students) per grade level. For Lorton Station, this does not follow the FCPS staff recommendation in the Readiness Checklist of at least two classes per grade level.

I do understand the overcrowding issue (203 over capacity according to Dashboard, so the school is actually more overcrowded than Haycock) but is the right answer to effectively turn Lorton Station into a Local Level IV site (with one class per grade level)? Might there be another way to group students (maybe keep Halley with the Lorton Station group?) and find another school to use (Gunston?) as a new AAP Center?

Hi OP, I live in Lorton, do not have an Level IV kid, just level III kid. I care about Lorton. Would be curious to see if other Lorton area parents read DCUM.

It looks like FCPS won't make any changes to Lorton Station ES AAP this coming school year. I won't worry to much about it now.

Really? How do you know this? It is part of the main motion in establishing the new center at Silverbrook ES:

I move that the School Board continue to explore, via thorough analysis and discussion with stakeholders, the expansion of AAP elementary and middle school centers with a goal of potential openings in fall 2013 at the following schools: Silverbrook Elementary, Cooper Middle, Herndon Middle, Thoreau Middle, and South County Middle.

OP, I'm interested in Lorton Center b/c I'm in a school that was originally slated to be moved from Spring. Est. to LC.

I didn't realize you were so over crowded. So *interesting* that we never hear from the LC parents on here and from what you've said it's worse than the situation at Haycock --- which god knows -- is the center of the FCPS universe.

You are an ass 19:27! Nothing is wrong with Lorton. There are a lot of intelligent children here living with high HHI who care about the academic future of their children.

I think 19:27 was being facetious... and I took his/her point as true.... the DCUM Va. Schools board is really overrun by people who have no interest or connection with Lorton or the Eastern/Southern part of Ffx. Cnty.

Sounds like a bad precedent for anyone concerned with the size of AAP centers. I would definitely talk to your school board member. You could also ask your PTA president his or her thoughts.

is that the fault of people in Mclean or Vienna? Lorton has the new severely underpopulated middle school. So much available capacity that George Mason might open a Lab School at Lake Braddock.

12:41 -- yes, it is your fault that you want decisions to be made strictly based on how it affects you and the Haycock/McLean/Vienna people without considering that the Board's policies might have a positive effect on the lowly Southern/Eastern part of the county.

And by the way, your post is kind of a case-in-point to show what you don't know about other parts of the county.... the Lorton area feeds to South County and Hayfield. It has nothing to do with Lake Braddock and their capacity.

Lake Braddock shares a boundary with South County so it does seem a pity that people paid for a new building when a neighbor has capacity.
