generally how much does this cost? (about 6 windows--all standard size). House is from 1940--windows never replaced.
How long does the process take? Anyone have recommendations for a company? |
| I would say around $300-$400 installed for each standard windows. Now if you find a handyman, might be $250-$300 installed if window cost $150 each. |

PP's estimates seem low. We paid closer to $800 per window, but might well have gotten ripped off.
It was all done in one day. HUGE difference in temperature stability, now that the drafty old windows are gone. |
$800! We've installed our own before and for the cheapest vinyl, non-standard size windows we paid about $180 a piece. Wood I believe cost about $300 for the same. |
| 800 is a ripoff. Search the forum - there are a lot of threads in this topic. |
Definitely got ripped off big time, we paid ok double hung windows from lowes for about $175 each, paid about $90 per window since they were already working in our house. Installing them is not rocket science if you are type of hands on person, but takes about 4-5 hours each, so I figure I better pay $90 let them do it. But again, I think paying $300-$350 per window with insurance would be fair price. |

Wait, are we talking custom or off the shelf?
My $800 windows were custom. My house is over 100 years old, and the windows are non-standard and all slightly different. I also opted for the triple pane. |
| Ok, I just re-read OP, and saw that hers are standard. Sorry for derailing with my not-so-relevant input. |
| We paid over $500 a window DIY too. It really depends on your windows. Off the shelf is much cheaper but they are not nearly as nice. |
