Infertility Support and Discussion
Can someone please recommend an ob/gyn who is willing to run tests to diagnose underlying reason for irregular cycles/possible PCOS and willing and able to offer treatment (such as Metformin for PCOS)? Anyone in NW DC, Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Rockville or Silver Spring would work. Thanks.
I believe most obgyns nowadays are familiar with PCOS and its treatment but if you are trying to get pregnant you may want to see a reproductive endocrinologist (aka a fertility specialist). RE's in the area are Shady Grove, Columbia Fertility, Dominion, Metro Fertility, etc.
OP here- Actually, my ob/gyn is unwilling to even find out if I have PCOS. When I told her I thought that I might have PCOS, she answered "PCOS is a very complicated diagnosis, we won't get into it". Even though I have quite a few symptoms that clearly indicate PCOS!!! I really need a new ob/gyn. I would love to see an RE but my insurance won't cover it.

17:08 poster here. Yikes! Nice bedside manner, huh!?!? Sorry to hear your obgyn is clueless. I don't have any specific recommendations for an obgyn - I'm on the hunt for a new one myself - but hopefully someone else will post some suggestions.
Just a quick note on insurance coverage -- I have no coverage for treatment of infertility but I do have coverage for "diagnosis of underlying condition." So, if I have a consultation with an RE it is covered by insurance. If they run bloodwork and use the diagnostic code "anovulation" my insurance will cover it. If they use the diagnostic code for "PCOS" or "unexplained infertility" they won't cover it. I have seen two different RE's that were willing to make this slight alteration in order to have my lab work covered by insurance. Also, you could likely go to a regular endocrinologist for diagnosis and treatment of PCOS. That's the rub with infertility. If you have an "illness" that needs treating, they will cover it. But if you can't get pregnant due to the illness... tough luck. The system stinks. By the way, if you live in VA there is legislation in the Senate that may mandate some fertility coverage.
