OB/GYN recommendation for PCOS/irregular cycles?

Anonymous
Can someone please recommend an ob/gyn who is willing to run tests to diagnose underlying reason for irregular cycles/possible PCOS and willing and able to offer treatment (such as Metformin for PCOS)? Anyone in NW DC, Chevy Chase, Bethesda, Rockville or Silver Spring would work. Thanks.

Dr. Preston Sacks - at Columbia Fertility - diagnosed and treated (successfully - I am now pregnant) my PCOS. He is an RE, not an OB. I highly recommend him.

An RE also helped me solve PCOS (almost immediately) and got pregnant soon there after. Dr. Sharara in Reston VA. Diet was his biggest intervention...no sugar at all.

OP here- thanks for your replies. The problem is that my insurance company won't cover fertility treatment so that's why I am looking for an ob/gyn who could help me.

Dr. Laurie Tyau in Silver Spring can help you with this problem. She helped me when I was planning to get pregnant the first time. We did a sit down consultation and made a plan for diagnosing and "fertility." She tested hormone levels at different points, had a plan for metformin, and eventually clomid if I needed it. I didn't feel rushed. We had mapped out a 1 year plan. As with any high demand physician I would recommend going in with a list of questions and your thoughts on your own health and history. Fortunately for me I got pregnant pretty quickly and am now pregnant with my 2nd. She has been very supportive.

OP here- Thanks a lot 09:15, this might be just what I need. I will call on Monday to make an appointment. Thanks again. I have had a really rough time with my current ob/gyn who refused to help me and who told me to go see an RE (which I can't do b/c of my ins.) so I really need an ob/gyn who can help me. THANK YOU and Congratulations on your pregnancies!

I also saw Dr. Sacks at Columbia Fertility. Diagnosed with PCOS and got pregnant just using metformin. My husband and I thought Dr. Sacks was really great.

I just posted about Dr. Sacks and then more carefully read all the postings. Your insurance company may pay for you to see an RE if you are being treated for PCOS. Not everything gets billed as fetility treatments. I was suprised how much my insurance covered and how flexible they were.

I got to Drs. Reiter and Hill. MY ob/gyn (actually a nurse practitioner - Noelle Soobert) ran blood tests for PCOS after I suggested that I thought I might have it. When the results came back indicating that I did have PCOS, she suggested I see an RE. I'm not sure if she could have prescribed metformin for me if I had said I didn't want to see the RE. She did mention, however, that she could put me on clomid. I chose to see the RE though before going with the clomid.

Dr DiMattina at Dominion Fertility in Arlington is a wonderful RE who treated me for PCOS with metformin..I got pregnant in about 6 months. My OB though, Dr Footer in DC also prescribes metformin and is wonderful.

OP here- To 12:05: by Dr. Footer do you mean Dr. Richard Footer or Dr. Robert Footer? Thanks.

I was in the same boat as you, PCOS w/o fertility coverage. Although my insurance (BCBS) didn't cover "fertility treatment," they did cover "fertility testing." I saw a gyn without luck before switching to Dr. Osborn at Shady Grove Fertility. SG is great about working w/ various insurance plans to distinguish what is and isn't covered. My entire fertility work-up was covered, however, treatment wasn't. FWIW, I doubt it will matter whether you're with a gyn or an RE when determining what your insurance will cover (they won't be any more likely to pay for fertility treatment administered by a gyn than an RE), however, you will get much more specialized care if you see an RE. I wasted months trying to get pregnant with a gyn who specialized in infertility, then switched to Shady Grove and got pregnant almost immediately.
