Trying to grow out a bob with thick hair

Anonymous
I have very thick hair that I've had in a bob with bangs for many years. I can't really do layers because it is so think. It ends up looking like I took a scissors to my own hair. Not a good look. I've decided to grow it long again. It is blunt cut all the way around. I've grown it out a few inches and now the back of it keeps flipping out. Even if I blow it dry (which takes a while b/c it is so thick), when I wake up the next morning, the back of it has flipped out. Any suggestions to get it to curl under? I've never used rollers before. Would they work? I do get it trimmed every 6-8 weeks.

I have the same problem. I usually blow dry in the morning so it looks fine for a while but flips out again by mid-day. If you're willing to change your routine to the morning you can try this: blow dry it under, then switch your blow dryer to the cool setting and blow dry it under again. The cold air will help set it. Also I've recently started using velcro rollers which are super easy. Get the biggest ones you can that still allow you to roll the full length of hair under. I use these every other day when I don't wash my hair. Usually I blow dry it a little first (even though it's already dry) just to let the heat help relax the hair, then I curl under and finish the rest of makeup/clothes before taking it out.

Really the best solution is to just wait for it to grow out to a length where it doesn't flip. I'm almost there and it has taken quite a number of months, even with my great pregnancy hair growth rate. Been tempted to cut it short again multiple times but I am staying strong!!

Layers were made for thick hair, so you must not have the right stylist. I've had layers since I was 8 as it is the best way to manage thick hair.

Yep, you definitely need layers.

Flatiron.

I thought layers were for thin hair so it could appear thicker. Whenever I've gotten layers in my thick hair, it looks like I took the scissors and chopped it off myself. I hated the look.

Definitely layers and flat iron.

Layers and a flat iron.

Use hair conditioner on the ends and let the hair grow out more. Other wise, expect to spend lot of time every morning using various tools.
