i always ask "what's it like to work for shannon"? or stuff that's open ended, with peers or those who've worked with my new manager before
Of my potential manager I always ask: how would you describe your management style? That one question revealed a lot about someone I realized I would notwant to work for! (the first thing they said was that they can be a perfectionist, ugh, and a few negative things which really turned me off) Those open-ended responses are the most revealing, to say the least. Also try to get a sense of what the work-life balance is from someone in the group, esp. if you work there now you may be able to find out through informal channels. Also listen to cues about the working relationships of people in the new group. One job I interviewed for, all 6 people I interviewed with mentioned "logging on" after hours quite regularly. Again, not a place I'd want to work. |
