Bullying: what is DCPS/CS process? How effective is it?

Just curious: How effective do parents on this forum feel DCPS/charter schools in dealing with bullying?

I had an experience at my high-school and it was handle swiftly and productively. It definitely involved a gamut of people to get a hold on the situation.

Lafayette has developed a curriculum for dealing with it and hired a teacher who focuses on just that. It has been effective.

YY has had a problem historically with this.
Their social worker helped create a program to deal with it - oh wait a second - they don't have anyone in a position like this.

The only problem YY has had is a couple of wack-job families and a couple of PA leaders with axes to grind. BTW they have a counselor this year.

Really? Perhaps you're referring to the Peace teacher/Peace club? I think the peace club curriculum is beneficial, but hasn't dealt with the invidual incidents of bullying. In fact, bullying and mean girl cliques continue to be a problem at Lafayette.

And then the mean Lafayette girls go to Deal and continue with the cliques and really mean spirited nastiness. My (non Lafayette) kid got a whole new head spinning education on "mean" in sixth grade from a few Lafayette girls. It seemed like the clique behavior was just the way of life in "LaLa land" as Deal kids call it. My now eighth grader has made other (wiser, imo) friend choices.

The Peace Club *spews out coffee* come on now, what is really going on here? Bullying needs an audience to breed and survive, thus Deal must have an atmosphere like the arena stage.

Mean girls descend from mean moms. Not surprising it's in this, the my "car/house/husband/clothes/coffee is faster/bigger/richer/fancier/more caffeinated than yours" neighborhood.

To be fair it also had some very defensive administrators but yes, they've hired a counselor and things are going well. Good example of why not to listen to the nutso bashers.

When grade does this tend to start?

Lafayette breeds bullies. The past three years, we have expeisnnced, for ourselves and thru close friends some very "advanced" episodes of very clear cut bullying. The principal, social worker brush off or ignore almost all bullying.
Lafayette is a joke and the peace class sounds lovely but the content of the class is never put into action and habitual bullies never really face consequences. Many girls at Lafayette are aggressive and extremely cruel.

These mean girls target girls and boys. They are passive aggressive. It starts in grade 3 and continues thru 5th into Deal.

OP, Each school develops its own response. You should ask about specific schools and don't expect great answers on this forum. But if the school "permits" bullying (admin ignores and admin and parents deny), than it becomes part of the culture. Do your research on individual schools, talk to admin at school you are interested in and try to get a sense of the parent community. Bullying starts early and will happen anywhere. If not dealt with bullying becomes a way kids learn to deal with each other.

I witnessed this between two Lafayette boys recently. One of the boys had a history of being bullied by the other boy at Lafayette. The bullied kid was really still stinging from what had gone on in ES with this kid. My kids did not go there--but this boy and some the other girls nearby gave me an earful. Interestingly, Deal tolerates none of this--the principal there is pretty awesome so far in his handling of incidents, whether it is yelling security guards or barking teachers or incidents between students...may it continue : )

Oyster-Adams has a terrible bullying problem. They have finally started to hand out consequences this year and have detailed them in the student handbook
