Triathlon

Any triathletes out there? I really want to start doing some this year. I have the capability in running and biking. I have been working really hard on my swimming and I should be fine for a short sprint triathlon. How do you figure out the transitions etc and what you need to do at the race? I do not have time to sign up for the formal DC Beginner Triathlon program, so I would like to try to figure it out myself. Is that possible? The logistics scare me a bit without having a group to "teach" me about that stuff. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the awesome world of tris! I've been doing them for almost 8yrs and love it.

There are lots of places online to find some basic plans, and get advice on transitions. For a very supportive message board and forum, I'd suggest Trifuel or Beginnertriathlete.com

There is also a book called "Triathlon Training in 4hrs a Week" that has a great segment on how to manage transitions. Hint: have as little stuff in transition as necessary and practice them in advance!

You've asked questions that could call for lots of conversations or long long posts. Check out one of those two sites, and good luck!

I did my first triathlon a little over two years ago. I did a sprint distance. I actually used a training plan I got out of shape magazine. It was simple and it got me to the finish line no problem. Here it is: http://www.shape.com/fitness/training-plans/triathlon-training-real-women-your-3-month-plan.

After my first race I got hooked. I will do my first Ironman this fall. I'm 43.

Have fun!
