Why would you ever need to go to the hospital if you have a miscarriage? I had one at 11 weeks, bled for 8 hours, and called the midwife on call 3 times throughout. It was spontaneous, painful, and sucky. But I did not go to the ER - that would have been more sucky. Instead I stayed where I was (I was at a beach house with friends for the weekend.. ugh), played cards, drink fluids, rested, and went through an entire package of mega maxi pads.
My DH was freaked about the amount of blood, but given how much your blood volume goes up in pregnancy, I figured I had lots to spare and that it also probably looked like more than it was. Bleeding slowed enough eventually for me to go to sleep without worrying about ruining the sheets, and I was fine. (Sad, devastated even, but fine physically.) I went to see the the midwives several days later, and they didn't even do any kind of exam - I had to request an ultrasound, which I wanted for closure, and to be sure it was "complete" (it was.) Under what circumstances in early pregnancy would you need medical attention if you have a miscarriage? |
| I had to have a D&C or whatever it's called and also needed a Rhogam shot immediately after b/c I am RH negative. They gave me the option to miscarry naturally but I did not really want to wait around for it. |
| Yeh, you're a jerk |
| Contrary to your post some women have an absolutely horrid time and lose a lot of blood or some other complication. When you are ignorant, try not to come across as an a**hole. |

Couple of issues for me led to a hospital trip and admittance for an overnight. Mine was at 8 weeks. I tried to do the miscarriage with the pills instead of a D&C. Huge mistake, in my case. I bled so much that my blood pressure dropped and I got incredibly faint and passed out. My husband had run out to get some medicine and came home and found me in a pool of blood.
I had been heavy bleeding for 2.5 days at this point and still had not passed all the tissue and other stuff. It basically was stuck. Had I not ended up in the ER, I might have gone into sepsis (not sure that is the correct terminology). It was horrible and the ER docs and my OB told me I only narrowly escaped needing a blood transfusion. My only regret is that I did not opt for the D&C at the outset. Still, exactly 11 months later I delivered a healthy baby. Good luck everyone. |

For me, when I saw blood the first time, I called my OB. He gave me some advice, including what amount/color of blood should cause me to go to the ER. He wanted them to be able to rule out a m/c from any other potential complications by performing an ultrasound.
Additionally, it sounds like you were comfortable with letting nature take its own course. For other women, either emotionally or for medical reasons, a D&C is advised which means a medical procedure. I'm sorry for your loss, as well as those of us who have gone through the same. |
A non-jerky way to write this would have been: I had my MC at home at 11 weeks and didn't see the nurse until several days later. Under what circumstances in early pregnancy would you need medical attention if you have a miscarriage? |
| I've never understood what peoples problems with their appendixes are. Mines been in for my whole life and hasn't given me a lick of trouble. Why go to the er and have all that surgery? |
| Glad you were able to stay home, but that isn't the case for everyone I had a miscarriage at 11 weeks-bled, went to the doctor, no heartbeat and then they scheduled a D&C for the next day. I appreciated that as I have read that many people let is pass naturally but then all the tissue is not expelled and have to get one anyway. Not to mention, this way, I was able to have chromosomes done on the fetus to see if there were any problems. So, why don't you re-evaluate why you felt the need to post this in the manner you did. You clearly feel that by not going to the hospital you are better. Grow up-not everyone's situation is the same. |

OP, you said it yourself: they're not always "complete." When I had a m/c at 12 weeks, I planned to deal with it at home. But as with the PP above, tissue got stuck in my cervix and the pain was FAR worse than what I'd been dealing with for the prior 48 hours.
Trust me, a 3am trip to the ER wasn't my first choice. |

(1) It was a missed miscarriage, so you have to have a D&C
(2) Not everything came out after your natural miscarriage, which could lead to infection and other bad things, so you have to have a D&C to make sure it all gets out (3) Yes you are a jerk. |
I'll never understand why people go to hospital when they have a heart attack. When I am suffering from a heartache, I just drink myself into a stupor. |

Because not everyone's miscarriage is exactly like yours was.
Hey, I have a new question!! Why do some people have to die when they get shot? I mean, I know this one guy who got shot, and he bled a lot, and then he went to the hospital and got operated on, and he didn't die. So why do some people choose to die when they get hit by a bullet? I mean, really, OP. Come on. |
| I didn't go to the ER because I had nothing better to do. I went because I was in extreme pain and was bleeding terribly -- far surpassing the "safe" levels laid out by my doc. I'd have preferred to ride it out at home, rather than hang out in the ER. In hindsight, I didn't need too much in the way of intervention and I didn't die, so perhaps I qualify as a wimp in the OP's mind. Oh well. |
