Starting new private school in Maryland?

Anonymous
Also posted on Private School list: I'm in search of a parent who sent out an email last year, stating she/he was seeking other parents to help start a small, private school for kids who are very bright, but thrive better with a small class size (10 or less) If anyone has any info on this, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Sorry, don't know of post, but I am interested. No school (public or private) 'fits' my kid.

Deiner School in Potomac perhaps?

Deiner school has kids with more needs than the posters mention.

Thornton Friends school seems to address those needs

I'd personally like to see a school that addresses this need (for a small class, etc) in the EARLY grades--like beginning in K. We've come across many schools in the area that are well equipt to work with kids on the autism spectrum, but not kids off the spectrum who have other developmental issues--and who are very bright.

It is not a new school.

But how about the Katherine Maddux school in Potomac (housed in the Ivymount School and Beverly Farms Childcare center on Seven Locks Road).

Serves preschool-K, with small class sizes. No special needs kids there. Just bright kids who need more attention. Integrates speech, OT, and pragmatic/social skills with 2 teachers per class.

If the kids are getting Speech and OT, that is by definition, a special need. I am a special needs teacher and the school you are referring to (Maddux)) most certainly does have special needs children- and they are delightful! Your child might be lucky enough to attend one day. Special needs kids do not have a contagious disease and truth be told, every kid has a special need if you really get close.

Not PP, and I agree that all kids have needs--even those who are seen as 'typical'. But I disagree with PP about Maddux. Maddux serves a specific population of kids--and upon speaking at length with the Andrea Mullins, my kids' 'needs' would not be addressed there. Like any school, therapeutic or typical, Maddux is not for everyone.

What is the focus of the Maddux school?

Maddux (along with the Lab School) do not like kids anywhere on the Autism spectrum (not even the mildest of the mild)

Why?

I think the Lab School has a statement on its website indicating as much.

'Why' don't they accept kids on the spectrum? I suppose that is not their mission to educated kids on the spectrum.

The Diener School.org check it out, go see it. It will change your life and make you believe
