We've typically headed to Duck in late August and enjoyed it. Our schedule and budget are both a bit more limited this year, so we're considering early June before schools let out.
We're worried that it may be too chilly to enjoy the trip. Our kids are 2 and 5, so going in the the ocean isn't a big thing for them. But we spend a ton of time on the beach and in the pool. TIA |
| You'll probably be okay, but no guarantee. We went mid-late May for years (family friends let us stay free before peak rental season began) and I'd say it was 50/50 if you'd be cold in a bathing suit on the beach. Regardless, the weather will be nice for most activities other than swimming! |
| We love it there even in April. No swimming in the ocean, but that's OK. June's great. |
| We went in late June and it was delightful, but the water was still a little chilly (for OBX -- it was a bathtub compared to New England). |
| Went in mid-June two years ago. The weather was warm and it was nice to lay on the beach and even got hot a few afternoons. The water was way too cold to be in. |
A heated pool would be nice. Weather at the OBX in June can be nice and warm, but it may not be. Just pack a few long sleeves with your swimsuits and have a good time! It will be less crowded, too

| We love early June -- less crowded. We do reserve a heated pool but otherwise have had good luck with weather. |

We have been several times around Memorial Day to party with friends and I always find it's perfect for sitting around in the sun drinking beers but the ocean is a little too cool for my tastes. We went last year in mid-late June just after school let out and it was perfect for mornings at the beach and afternoons at the pool with our 2 young kids. We also climbed the Cape Hatteras lighthouse and went to the toy store on the highway right there, and took the ferry to Ocracoke for lunch another day, highly recommend both day trips. Kids have to be at least 42 inches tall to be allowed up the lighthouse stairs, you may not carry them.
Honestly the sand was hot and the dunes were big, our kids (3 and 5) preferred the pool. |
