We just got a dog this fall and are thinking of taking her on vacation with us when we go to the beach this summer. We usually go to the Outer Banks but didn't go last summer, so my memory is bit fuzzy. I know I can rent a dog-friendly beach house but I was wondering if dogs are allowed on the beach? I just don't remember seeing them before, but this issue wasn't on my radar back then. I feel like I would see them in the evening/late afternoon maybe? She loves the water (lab mix) and I'd love for her to be able to splash around. Maybe the sound side is better?
Any recommendations or helpful hints for travelling with a dog on a family vacation would be welcomed! |
We take ours and go on the beach with a leash. I hate when people let their dogs run without. they always say oh he or she is friendly. Well tell that to the 4 year odl it is chasing around.
We usually keep ours inside becuase it is soooooooooooooooo hot for them and walk them early morning and night. and pipck up the crap after. |
Different rules in different places at OBX. They are here: http://www.outerbanks.org/outerbanks-pets-on-the-beach/ |
OBX is riddled with fleas; I would think twice about bringing a dog down there. We've been half a dozen times and have never brought our dogs. |
And how do you know this? I've never been bit by a flea at OBX. |
Second that OBX is riddled with sand fleas! No thanks!

We take our every year and he comes to the beach with us. But we don't go to a very populated part of the beach - I would be wary of taking any dog to a crowded beach. Also second that it grts very hot! |
Thanks folks--that is all food for thought.
I don't let her run around off leash ever, except at the dog park, so no worries there! |
Fleas are an issue there.
I went with friends last year. Their dog was scratching like mad before the week was out. It took several treatments and her skin was a mess for a couple of months. They weren't in the rental house, but were all over the common areas for walking. |
That's what Frontline is for. |
YES! Luckily I've never been impacted, but a friend of mine was eaten alive. It was horrendous, she had bites from head to toe. We board our dog when we go to the OBX, for a few reasons: -homes that allow dogs are more expensive -finding a home that allows dogs is harder -often homes that allow dogs are shit holes |
