My 3rd grader never has any homework at all. Is this standard in MCPS? What is your third grader doing, especially in math? |
My third-grader is in the BCC cluster and did not have homework this week. In normal, full weeks, she is supposed to:
A) read for at least 20 minutes and answer in three good sentences one of a list of questions about the book; B) do one page of math problems C) choose and complete one spelling activity from a long list, ranging from looking up words in the dictionary to copying words in different colors to making a crossword puzzle or word search In addition, she has a monthly book project. |
That was my experience last year in NEC. |
My third grader has to read for 20 minutes (no questions- just has to write down what he read and for how long) and do a quick math worksheet each night.
New curriculum doesn't have spelling and no writing homework ever. |
OP here, I have also noticed they don't seem to write much. The hw list above seems reasonable. I'm concerned they're not going to be prepared for grade four, the expectations are just so low this year. |
Forgot to mention that she does A, B and C nightly. |
Mine has research/writing projects and math assignments. Sometimes it's a large research/writing project broken down over several days and they need to turn it in at the end of the week. |
My 2nd grader has too much HW in my opinion. A packet comes home weekly. She has 2 math assignments, 2 reading assignments, silent reading, 2 online math activities to complete, and 2 spelling activities to complete (16 assigned spelling words each week)! Ughhh! I hate HW!! |
My 3rd grader comes home with laughable homework this year under 2.0. Last week, DD colored in circles to represent fractions. I'm talking color 1/2 of the circle red and 1/2 blue. It looked like K or 1st grade work. This wasn't always the norm, my older DD had substantial math homework (and classwork) last year. I worry all the time that this year's 3rd graders are being let down by this curriculum. I feel like my DD is working in the functional equivalent of a 1st grade classroom. How will they ever catch up and compete with kids that are really learning something? Lots of frustration here. |
That is K or 1st grade work. Where are you? |
I have a second grader in Silver Spring. She has the same homework, plus a few minutes of math facts practice per night. No monthly book project though. OP, we do not see much writing in the homework, but substantial writing occurs during the school day. |
Bethesda. And that is 3rd grade work under the curriculum 2.0 ![]() |

my 3rd grader is doing more or less the same thing with fractions, coloring in circles, and we're not in Bethesda (but we are in Mont. Co.).
I think Americans should be VERY concerned about their kids falling behind if the curriculum continues this way...this week they had only one full day of school, and my DS said that with the 2 short days the teachers really didn't have much time to teach anything on those days. SAD....and truly scary. I consider this a wasted year for my son and it concerns me |
