On some independent school websites they do state the number of Kindergarten students admitted. If anyone has information on the number of students admitted please share!!!
Beauvoir - 21 or so K students (sure about this figure it is on the website) Maret School - ?????????? Potomac School - ?????????? Norwood School - ????????? Sidwell School - 22 K students I think |
Maret takes about 20, but after sibling and alumni and faculty applicants there may only be a few available slots. Beauvoir and Sidwell will, presumably, take most of their sibling applicants in Pre-K, but there are typically some that are taken in K as well. As a result, it is difficult to determine the actual number of openings and the schools aren't always willing to give you that information. |
I am surprised to read the OP. 21 new kindergartners at Sidwell last year? This is purely anecdotal, but I heard from my friends who applied to Sidwell K last year that no (or maybe 1 or 2) kids who were not siblings/alumni kids got in at all. At the school my daughter attends there were 12 solid openings for K. There are three classes of 12 kids each. I would be surprised to hear that Sidwell has that many more spaces at that entry point. I also understood (again anecdotally) that Maret has very few spots at K for non-sibs/alumni. I did hear from GDS admissions a year or two ago that Pre-K and K were both amin entry points and they had a bunch of spots but last year I knew about 6 families and none got in there either. |
Norwood starts in K so that's its biggest entry year. It usually has a few slots each year for the other grades as well but it's definitely easiest to get in at K. It has a strong sibling policy but there are always a lot of new children/families admitted for kindergarten. |
Maret does not have a strong sibling preference. |
At our meeting with the admissions director, we were told that Maret accepts about 60 percent of siblings in order to keep spots open for new families. |
18-20 at Maret. 40% new families = 7-8 new children - (a non-white child + legacy/high donor/high connection child + faculty child) = 4-5 new children, maybe. (2 boys, 2 girls)
You can do the same math for pre-k at Sidwell, GDS, and Beauvoir. Take Sidwell - 22 spots. Half go to siblings and Quakers. That leaves about 5 or 6 spots for boys and 5 or 6 for girls. Then take a few spots for diversity applicants and the Clintons of the world. Not much left. |
re: Maret
I think she meant they take 60% of sibling applicants, not that 60% of those accepted are siblings, so there might be more or more likely, fewer places for new families. Doesn't change the outcome that much, though. |
PP here. You're right. Numbers are not very encouraging however you look at it. I guess you just don't give up hope and think your child will be the one. Otherwise, why go through this awful process. |
