Trains hands down. Thomas and Geo Trax is what we have. Also matchbox cars and hotwheels. The very best thing that we have is a mat that had a road printed on it and you play cars on it. It is a Toys 'R Us brand that cost about $15.

Games, games, games ... Monopoly Jr. and card games are his favorites.

Flashlights, for some reason, are really neat.

I guess discovering dust bunnies under the bed in the dark is really fun.
It's quite comical and very cute.

I second the flashlight recommendation, along with play tools, toy binoculars and magnifying glass. Any kind of motor vehicle from Matchbox to his battery operated Nascar for the backyard. Animals (we have tiger obsession here) and any kind of ball would be a hit. Crafty things (rubber stamps and paints) seem to surge in interest every few weeks, and same with simple board games. Favorite toy of all time: Stomp Rocket, a $15 set of foam "rockets" that fly in the air when you "stomp" on the simple launcher. Works great in the backyard or basement.

As for character stuff, we're still very big on Diego and Superman, although I think Spiderman is a much more popular choice with his friends.

Who makes Stomp Rockets? Seems like something Santa might want to bring for my slightly older than 5 year olds.

Here's a link for stomp rocket, at least the version we have: http://www.amazon.com/D-Company-25415-Junior-Rocket/dp/B0006N6UQE/ref=pd_sim_t_1. It comes with 4 rockets which helps avoid the usual arguing over who gets which toy. I think there are more powerful models for older kids too.

Stomp rockets are really fun (even for grownups) and a great way to burn off energy.
