Brick Addition?

Anonymous
We're planning to put an addition on our brick colonial and are meeting with an architect this week. Has anyone recently done a brick addition and how much more expensive was that compared to hardiplank? I know it will be more but i'm thinking that a brick addition with just a little siding will look better but am wondering if the cost will be prohibitive.

I don't have a quote but I'd expect it to be a lot more.

Much more - hard to know how much more b/c it depends on the size of your house. Put it this way: there's a reason there are so many brick houses with hardiplank bump outs and additions.

no matter what you do the brick never matches. unmatched brick completely negates the extra money spent and looks worse than hardiplank and vinyl siding

+1 This poster is exactly right about the brick never matching. We did one, got tons of samples, thought we had a good match and in the end it was not. We ended up painting all the brick on both the original house and the addition so it wouldn't stand out like a sore thumb.

We did it, but it helped that the original brick wa already painted, so all we had to worry about was matching the texture, not the color. It added significantly to the cost (that, plus we added a full-on masonry fireplace). We love it and think it helped the addition feel seamless.

We are actually selling the house in the Spring to move to a much larger new construction house. As the move gets closer, I honestly think we will really miss the old house. We did the addition right with all high quality stuff and we are not sure the new house will ever compare favorably to the old one (except for the space).

It really comes down to what you care about and the vibe of the house. I'm quite sure no one is going to pay for what we put into our addition, although overall our house will show really, really well. People comment on how great our house is all the time. Sniff.

OP here - thanks for your replies. We are not planning to paint the brick but was hoping to match the brick. We are planning a 2 story addition off the back of out house which includes adding a master bath and reconfiguring the existing 2nd level. We only have $250,000 to spend so it looks like brick is probably not the way to go.

I don't know how much it adds to the cost but one of the things I was told by people in the business is that true brick (not a brick veneer) is to rare these days that brick laying is no longer a common skill and quite specialist. It's tough to find the workers who can do this well, unlike in many other parts of the world.

No. Nothing, NOTHING looks worse than optic white siding sticking out of a red brick colonial like a cheap tumor.

I agree. I do not like a white siding box tacked onto the back of the house. I haven't seen this but thought a brick addition with maybe a small portion in a colored siding might look better.

I agree with you but what are other exterior options for a tasteful addition?

Then you all must hate all the NW DC neighborhoods b/c they are full of exactly this type of house - mine included!

As exemplified above, many people who do additions move into larger homes in a few years.

--save your money for a larger home and skip the addition.

We called one place for what you describe and they quoted us nearly 900k for brick addition! We said no thanks. Then shopped around and decided to just save for bigger
house (as noted in my other post).
