plantar fascitis

Anonymous
my heel has been hurting for several days. fits the description of plantar fascitis pretty well so i assume that's what it is. been limping for 5 days now, doesn't seem particularly better. trying ice today, can't really find any shoes that are ok.

how long does this usually take to get better?

Ouch! It can take a long time depending on your foot. I had to stop running completely because mine would flare even after I thought it was better. Do you know what caused it? I did get orthotics which helped for normal walking but I just can't do any impact sports or it flares again.

Lots of threads on this with good advice. Do a search in all forums (I think sometimes people post about it in expectant mom because it's a pregnancy ailment).

Check out http://www.heelthatpain.com I got heel cushions for my shoes that have worked wonders, plus a little boot that I wear to sleep. I've also made an effort to stretch (rolling my foot over a tennis ball is the best one for me), and I always wear shoes, even inside our home, which I didn't use to do. Crocs work well for that.

I've also started running in very cushy shoes and save the light ones for racing.

My heel pain flared up mid-November, and I treated it very aggressively. It still aches at times, but I can still run and walk as usual. I think they can take a long time to get better if you don't treat them.

Mine healed nice I started wearing shoes all day and evening. No more walking around the house in my socks.

I went to a podiatrist and was given a prescription (I think it was Mobrix or some thing like that) and these Velcro boots to where at night. After just a few weeks it was gone. I was surprised. From what I had read, I thought it would take longer to resolve.

Hate to tell you, but I've had it for 4 years.

Should read "Mobic" not Mobic and "wear" not where.

I just looked on Amazon. The boots I had looked like the Healwell night splints. They were so bulky that I would usually just wear them for a few hours at night while watching TV. Worked for me.

Ibuprofen, foot exercises, foot massages, and foot stretches several times per day made mine go away.

I had it in high school, and it was terrible. I saw a podiatrist, and they did nothing but prescribe expensive orthotics that did not help at all. The provided no guidance on stretches and exercises.

Try a podiatrist first. If you don't get results, see a dermatologist.

OP: actually feels somewhat better today. rested, took ibuprofin, wore my danskos, and stretched alot yesterday. keeping my fingers crossed. still wondering what brought it on. have been wearing new boots constantly the last few weeks, maybe they are the culprit. started suddenly after back to back 5 hour drives (to NYC and then upstate NY) over the holidays. thinking that when i'm driving my foot is pointed so maybe the muscles tightened up?

Google strassburg sock. It's the same principle as the boot, but less bulky.

I had plantar fasciitis for 2 years. What helped the most: the strassburg sock, superfeet soles in my shoes, birkenstock sandals instead of slippers or being barefoot, and stretches.
