From private DC school to BCC?

Anonymous
Has anyone moved their DD from a private to BCC in 9th? How did it go? Any advice or tips? Any way to meet kids the summer before? Just trying to decide if we should... Leaning in that direction.

If your DC goes to BCC what do you think of it?

Hi there, I am researching high schools for my daughter too and so far I just heard that lots of students- more half has transfer from privates shools just like your daughter at all Bethesda HS

I have also heard from other parents fromBCC is more on the snobbish side, like the majority of the studen care if you are wearing brand names or not or if you eat at Chipotle or school lunch during lunchtime and how much your family makes...etc. Or maybe it just depends on what type of friends your DD chooses. They are also a little more "wild" because of their approximate closeness to downtown Bethesda..

For freshmens they have this "welcome Freshman party" that the school does for newcomers not just freshmans

Have you looked at other schools or is your home zoned for BCC?

Our house is zoned for BCC. We've thought about catholic but I think we want to try BCC first.

Ahahaha! How old are you, sweetie? It's not often that a poster gets "freshmen" wrong twice in the same post.

Maybe English is not her native language.

Mine went from a DC private to another Bethesda HS in 9th and it went very smoothly. There is a new family welcoming committee but it was more for people new to the area. There were definitely other kids entering in 9th from outside MCPS.

Sports made a big difference because DC did preseason so knew a ton of people by the time school started.

Do you know which girls sports are open to everyone?

It varies a bit by school in terms of competitiveness. For fall sports - Cross country is a no cut sport. JV field hockey is probably pretty open. Don't know if BCC has a crew club, ours is open to all (but it doesn't start until later). Soccer is competitive. Poms is competitive. Tennis is competitive. Don't know about volleyball.

Preseason/try outs are 2 weeks before school starts. Most teams start on a Saturday - it's a county wide date.
