I'm preg. with my second and I'm switching to a midwife from an OB. I know with my OB, i went in & had the pregnancy confirmed in the office then had my first "real" pre-natal appt a few wks later. The mid-wife has suggested I come in "by 8 wks" for my first visit, so I assume she's unconcerned about confirming my pregnancy with an in-office urine or blood test. Anyone else gone this route? Also, does anyone remember when their first sono was? I plan to get a NT test, so maybe thats when it will be (around 11-12 wks).

I did the same thing. I think OBs/midwives are more casual with "experienced" mothers. |
I am 19 weeks and they didn't do a blood test... did a confirmation ultrasound at 9 weeks. I think that is standard at the office I go to. |
My OB didn't want to see me until 8 or 9 weeks with both pregnancies. They said to call before if there were any problems. |
No, it's certainly not necessary to confirm the pregnancy with a blood test, unless perhaps you are uncertain as to whether or not you are pregnant. |
ok mamas, thanks for the reassurance. amazing how quickly one forgets! |
If you don't have a past history of m/c or uncertain if preg, then there is no reason for the blood test - unless the midwife is concerned with the HCG (?) values (but these numbers don't indicate how far along, just that you're preggers).
Congrats! |
And even if there were problems, there is, unfortunately, very little the doc. can do for you. ![]() |
I had the urine and the blood test. OB said that even if I had a miscarriage, the hormones in my urine would show that I was still pregnant. |
I only did the blood tests (2 - one week apart) so I could see the hormone levels going up after a chemical pg and a miscarriage. It was reassuring. Otherwise, I don't see the point, really. |
