Recurrent Miscarriages - Dr. Recs

Anonymous
I'm currently going through a miscarriage, the second in six months both at 6-7 weeks. No problems getting pregnant - both pregancies occurred during first ovulation cycle of trying. I realize that having one or even two miscarriages is not uncommon, but this would be our first child and given that I'm in my mid-thirties I'm not a huge fan of waiting until my third miscarriage for testing to determine if there are underlying problems. I'm perfectly happy with Reiter Hill as my general OBGYN, but does anyone have experience with how they treat recurrent miscarriages? Do they take a wait and see approach or are they more proactive?

Any other recommendations for doctors would be very much appreciated.

Thanks.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I have not been in your boat, but I am a Reiter Hill patient and Dr. Sartawi saw me when we decided to try to get pregnant at 35 and I knew it would be hard based on a prior medical history. She was very proactive and gave me a referral right away to a fertility specialist (Dr. Sharara in Reston). He was amazing and got me preg in less than 6 mo. (he is endo and ob/gyn). It may be that some MDs at RH are more proactive than others but I found Sartawi to save the day.

Maybe check out Dr. Lincoln (or other drs.) at GIVF. They're in Fairfax, VA. I also had 2 m/c's when I was in my early to mid-30's. After the first one I was basically told it was probably just bad luck, so I went ahead and tried again - with the same "bad luck." At that point, notwithstanding my OB's continued lack of concern (he was very nice and compassionate, but just didn't think it was too much to worry about), I became proactive and went to GIVF (they do more than just IVF). Turns out I had a problem that required a bunch of tests and ultimately surgery, from which I also had to take time away from TTC to heal. I'm glad I got proactive on my own as early as I did, because the journey can sometimes be longer than you anticipate. It's as easy as making a phone call and an appointment. If you have a consultation and you leave convinced that you're overreacting or somehow jumping into the process prematurely, nobody will stop you from instead just TTC again. Whether it's GIVF or somewhere else, however, I really do recommend just having a consultation with a reproductive endocrinologist (sp?) just to get their take on your situation (OB's aren't always the best resource for those of us with recurrent pregnancy loss).

I went to Shady Grove Fertility for testing after my second miscarriage. They did the normal prescreening, and we chalked it up to bad luck. A friend of mine recommended we see a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist, but we didn't go.

It really helped to do the testing. When I did get pregnant again, it helped immensely to know that there was no reason why I was miscarrying. Good luck.

I too am currently experiences an m/c although "ectopic" and tomorrow will bet a methatrexate shot. The sonogram/utra sound showed no sac in womb and small cyst near ovar called cyst of pregnancy? My entire obgyn experience has not been good as it took her forever to call me back when I first started bleeding. I told her was leaving her practice due to all of the bad care (i.e going to the emergecny room and waiting 6 hours becasue I could reach her at her practice).

Anyway I have made an appointment with Shady Grove Fertility in Annapolis to try to get a more detailed explanation. I had a previus myomectom and then later c-section with my first child and am wondering if I have scar tissue. Or was it chromosomal. Any answer I get will ease my mind...even if they tell me that I can't conceive anylonger at least I can put that in perspective.

I"m sorry for your losses. I know how frustrating it can be at the OBs. I had four miscarriages in 18 months and am now currently 36 weeks pregnant. I've been to Shady Grove and George Washington IVF with Reproductive Endocrinologists. I'm now at Greater Washington Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Genetics in Silver Spring. Shady Grove ran lots of tests but didn't catch the one that seemed to matter. I tested fine for everything except MTHFR. Shady Grove ran this test but didn't tell me the results were off. GWMFMG re-ran the test because they noticed the results seemed strange. Anyway, I found the fertility places not as helpful if you don't really need their help getting pregnant, just staying pregnant. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

I have to pipe in - I also had MTHFR- were you homo or hetero? I had one mutation that was abnormal but really not contributing to m/c.. I did take baby aspirin- but had done that way before these results- so- can you please explain more on what you did? Did you go on heparin?

I'm compound hetero--

Preconception - Baby aspirin, Folgard 1xday, prenatals, DHA and additional folic acid, b6 and b12 (because my dr wouldn't prescribe 2 folgard a day and I'm trying to get 4-5 mg of folic acid).

Once pregnant - Lovenox 40 mg/2xday (started once there was a heartbeat at 6 weeks) and was also taking Prometrium for the 1st trimester. Continued to take Folgard 1xday, prenatals, DHA, Calcium/Magnesium and additional folic acid, b6 and b12.

Hope this helps!
