| Am I looking in the wrong place or is there some kind of conspiracy going on? I can't seem to find new versions on DVD of Disney classics like Snow White. I've tried online and even looked at ebay although all the ones that are 'new' from there are from China which makes me think they are pirate copies. Is there some kind of limited release that goes on with these movies? Do I need to join the Disney movie club to get access to them? If not, does anyone else have any ideas where to find them? |
Disney releases an old classic movie on dvd every so often. Other than that the classics are not widely available to purchase. I would try netflix if you want to see the movie. Other than that you have to wait until the movies are released for purchase. Once they sell out, they sell out. |
| Sleeping Beauty will be released next week |

It's a big freakin' scam perpetuated by evil Disney to make you buy the "Limited Release Editions" for twice the price of just a normal movie dvd. They put them out for a while and then they "go back in the vault."
I've now shelled out $30 for "super, two-disk"versions of Cinderella and Little Mermaid and my dd has absolutely no interest in disk 2 or all the other stuff on the dvd, besides the endless ads that come on before you can watch the main feature....but I digress

| ...and the moms of key characters die in so many Disney movies (did Walt have issues?)...but I digress, sorry. |
Walt didn't write the majority of his fairy tales. They are old Grimm Brother's stories or Hans Christian Anderson books. Perhaps they had issues. Walt just made them into movies. |
| Fairy tales were designed to make kids afraid of their mother dying and having an evil stepmother come into their lives. |
For a comparison of fairy tale with other kinds of stories, such as myths, legends and fables, see Traditional stories. Gustave Doré's illustration to the European fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood.A fairy tale or fairy story is a fictional story that may feature folkloric characters (such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, witches, giants, princesses, and talking animals) and enchantments, often involving a far-fetched sequence of events. In modern-day parlance, the term is also used to describe something blessed with princesses, as in "fairy tale ending" (a happy ending)[1] or "fairy tale romance", though not all fairy tales end happily. Colloquially, a "fairy tale" or "fairy story" can also mean any far-fetched story. In cultures where demons and witches are perceived as real, and the teller and hearer of a tale see it as having historical actuality, fairy tales may merge into legendary narratives. However, unlike legends and epics, they usually do not contain more than superficial references to religion and actual places, persons, and events; they take place "once upon a time" rather than in actual times.[2] The history of the fairy tale is particularly difficult to trace, because only the literary forms can survive. Still, folklorists have found these forms from every culture over many centuries. Thus the oral fairy tale may have existed for at least that long, although not perhaps recognized as a genre. The name "fairy tale" was first ascribed to them by Madame d'Aulnoy. Fairy tales, and works derived from fairy tales, are still written today. The older fairy tales were intended for an audience of adults as well as children, but they were associated with children as early as the writings of the précieuses; the Brothers Grimm titled their collection Children's and Household Tales, and the link with children has only grown stronger with time. Folklorists have classified fairy tales in various ways. Among the most notable are the Aarne-Thompson classification system and the morphological analysis of Vladimir Propp. Other folklorists have interpreted the tales' significance, but no school has been definitively established for the meaning of the tales. |
LOL - easy to see how they can be perceived that way. Originally, fairy tales were oral traditions told to children that essentially represented - from a child's magical way of thinking - reassurance that they could handle their individuation from their mother. Many of the characters in fairy tales represent intrapsychic aspects of a person's life - they're all parts of a single psyche, basically. That's why, in the traditional fairy tales, most of the characters don't have proper names but are rather known as "the father" or "the queen", etc. Fairy tales really lose their meaning when they are "prettified" and all of the "evil" characters are taken out. Then they become just trite stories about boys rescuing girls, etc. - instead of illustrations of reassurance that the anima and the animus of a child's psyche will be able to unite to overcome obstacles. |
In addition to all thats listed above none of the princessess look like my daughter so I've never had to worry about tracking down those evil DVDs

They are released periodically and some can be very hard to find once they well out. That said, there are usually sellers on Ebay or Amazon or wherever who hoard copies and sell them - we have been able to find new, non-pirated copies of all the movies we were interested in buying.
Another idea in addition to renting them from Netflix or wherever is to look at your public library - ours has copies of almost all the movies and lately we've been checking them out to "try them out" before buying.... |
What does your daughter look like? There is an Asian hero princess (Mulan), an Indian princess, an african princess, a blonde princess, a brunette princess, a red head princess and a persian princess. Have I missed any? Maybe a spanish princess, I can't think of one but I bet there is one. |
It actually is a conspiracy. Even pre-VCR, Disney would release a movie only once every seven years and then put it away. They figured out that if they held the movies back, each successive wave of kids would be dying to see it and they could fill a lot of theaters. Now they do the same things with DVDs. |
Disney is missing a black princess.....they are doing a new one w/ a black (african american) princess coming out next summer. |
As a closet Disney fan, I'm just dying to know... who are the "Indian" princess and the "african" princess to whom you refer? |
