Can anyone tell me why students at Kent Gardens who qualify for a center placement are still going to Churchill road under the proposed new realignments. If FCPS is looking for students to stay within their boundaries it doesn't make sense as Longfellow is the middle school for these students while kids from Churchill and Springhill would do to Cooper....... |
Franklin Sherman is a split feeder to Cooper and Longfellow. Why didn't that school [or parts of it] go to Churchill RD? |
It doesn't make sense, but the proposals don;t make a ton of sense. They are trying to arrange centers by middle school, but that doesn't work everywhere. It doesn't work for KG because the AAP center for Longfellow is Haycock, which is overcrowded. The KG kids used to go there and were re-routed to Churchill about 6 years ago. The initial task force plan would have moved them back into Haycock, but they are not doing that because there is no space. Over 100 kids are being moved out of Haycock this year and the school will still be overcrowded. The most likely scenario is that in 1-2 years, Haycock will no longer be a center because the base school is too large to fit a center. |
That is far from the most likely scenario. The most likely scenario is that Haycock will continue to have a center. It will just be smaller than it is now once Cluster 2 kids are sent to other schools. |
Believe that if you want, PP. For everyone else that's interested, look at the numbers. They are doing a renovation that will not be large enough for all of the students once it's done (even without the Cluster 2 kids). Look at the new CIP. It talks about AAP realignment for Haycock. The reality is that the base school is too large to accommodate a center as well. Once they re-route FS, CB and TL, it will no longer be a center. It will be Local Level IV. Haycock base students make up 40% of the center now anyway, so if they eliminate the other schools, they fit in the building. Janie said as much in recent meetings when she said they'd eliminate "programs" to make the school fit in the building. What else can they eliminate? You don't have to believe me. Look at the numbers and the documentation. A center and a huge base school just will not fit in the building they are building. |
The CIP talks about a "potential AAP program reduction," which is consistent with moving the Cluster 2 kids to another school. In comparison, the CIP refers to "potential for AAP relocation" for Hunters Woods, which is consistent with eliminating the center there. If the Cluster 2 kids get moved, Local Level IV is an option at other schools, and the addition is built, I don't see why Haycock wouldn't remain an AAP center with some students coming from other schools. |
Dream on, PP. |
Haycock parents want the real estate values of a center school and the numbers of a non-center school. Good luck with that! |
The real estate values will hold up fine whether or not your own little munchkins attend the Haycock AAP center. It's still part of an excellent school pyramid and very close to both West Falls Church Metro and Tysons. Try to grow up. |
back to PP's question - I am also concerned about the situation you discussed because it means the KG kids will come back to Longfellow knowing very few kids at a difficult age for them |
Back to OP - I agree this is a problem. It's not a big deal now because the kids know a big group of kids when all the Churchill kids go back to Longfellow, but when it is is just the KG kids, they'll know very few kids at Longfellow.
I think that KG should be realigned with the other Mclean schools, and the kids sent to Haycock. Unfortunately, that's probably a nonstarter, but I think it is still worth pushing the issue because in all the craziness, I'm not sure administrators even realize this situation exists. While it would mean adding kids to Haycock, it's really not a huge number and a very significant number of kids are going to be moved to Lemon Road. |
With grandfathering, it will be 3 years before the numbers at Haycock start to improve. After that point, FCPS may be willing to consider shifting Kent Gardens. |
I think 19:18 is right. Also, at some point soon, Haycock will be under renovation. The KG parents of AAP kids might want to stay at Churchill Road during the renovation period anyway. |
why not send kids from FS to Churchill if it is a split feeded elementary and send the kids from KG to Haycock???? |
They also want FCPS to pump more money into that school to justify the high price they paid for their home. |
