Is Les Miserables ok for a 7 year old child?

Anonymous
I bought two tickets to Les Miserables, musical at the National theater (not the movie), and I am planning to take by 7 year old DD. I read the novel and know that there are some hard parts, but I have never seen the musical. Is it going to be OK for a child that age? if you even saw the musical before, please let me know. thanks

It's an amazing musical. there isn't anything graphic or gory in it, but I don't think it's appropriate for a 7 year old. Very adult themes, mature storyline. I think it would be a waste to bring a 7 year old. Even so e adults I know didn't appreciate it or enjoy it.

We've seen in a couple of times. I think it's fine for a seven year old. Think PG or maybe PG-13. Several references to prostitution. My son saw it for the first time when he was 8 and the sexual references went right over his head. There are a couple of swear words sprinkled throughout the dialogue, but again nothing major.

If you have issues with violence, you won't like it. Nothing graphic, but several really cool fight scenes. Think about your child's attention span. It's long. My 8 year old had no trouble sitting through it.

I guess it depends on your tolerance level. I was fine with it.

I don't think they would be scared by it, but I don't think there is much a 7 year old would understand or enjoy about it.

We went to see Les Mis at the Kennedy center last year. My dd was 10, and there were definitely things I wish she hadn't seen.

One of the lead characters works as a prostitute, and there is an entire song about "lovely ladies." There was also another scene where 2 people were fake "humping" during a 3-4 minute song with the innkeepers.

The musical is an amazing experience, but I really could have done without those things.

This a thousand times over.

It's pretty long too, might consider if your kid can sit through the whole thing.

And a child is shot and killed in the musical. There is prostitution, sexual harrasement, endentured servitude, implied child abuse.

I say no to taking a 7 year old

+1. I wouldn't bring a 7-year-old, even a very, very mature 7-year-old. And let me pile on to the comments emphasizing how long it is.

Depends on the kid. Normally no, it if your child is interested in musicals and has a good attention span I say go for it.

NO, it's not appropriate for a 7 year old. That play is dark as hell. In addition to all the things mentioned above, there's a suicide too. Pretty much all the characters, except for 2 who have a reasonably happy ending, are killed, kill themselves, or die a miserable, horrible death. I mean, really? It's for adults. Perhaps mature middle schoolers, or high school aged teens. But there is no way I would bring an elementary aged kid to Les Mis. Certainly not a 7 year old.

Yes, please go read a synopsis of the story and hire a babysitter.

Exactly. Think about the meaning of the title. I don't know which part of the plot you would even want to explain to your seven year old. Even of the two mentioned above - one endured child abuse and becoming an orphan. The other sings "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables." This is not 42nd Street. The show is for teens and adults.

All Broadway shows are okay for my 7 yr old triplets. We do not restrict art.
