All I ever want to eat is tuna sandwiches...

so I am wondering exactly how BAD this is? I am 16 weeks pregnant with #2 and went from having wicked nausea all day long to wanting only tuna, pretty much every day. I am a big believer in the whole moderation thing, so I have been trying to keep it to 3 times per week. Thoughts?

You should really try to stay away from tuna completely, but doctors say max once/week is OK. It is really not worth it...

you should try to limit tuna due to mercury. try to use the light tuna instead of albacore

try to make salmon salad instead? use boned, skinless pink salmon and prepare the way you would tuna salad. maybe that would suffice?

Or chicken salad using canned chicken. Tastes a lot like tuna salad IMO.

I had a tuna salad on toasted wheat with extra pickles at least once a week while pregnant. I think the PP with alternatives are great though. I was the type that would say "listen to your body....trust yourself," etc until I started craving dirt, mud, and sand during my last trimester

I was trying to find a great article I read on mercury and pregnancy but I cannot find it. You should basicaly really stay away from it. It does bad things.

Wrong article! So sorry. But please google mercury and birth defects. It is really very serious.

I think IQ loss is probably a more likely problem than birth defects.

Hi - I ate a tuna sandwich almost everyday for both my pregnancies! I know, I know I did not listen to the reports - it was the only thing I could hold down, believe it or not......Anyway, my son just scored 99.9% on the IQ test, if that is any reassurance?!?!?!?! Not sure about my second......still a baby.

What about all those sushi-eating Japanese? They sure have smart kids!

All I could eat was peanut butter and bologna on toasted wheat bread. It made people sick to watch me eat it and at the time they were concerned about peanut butter and pregnancy. You can't win. Eat your sandwiches.

i wonder if it's psychological - you want it because you're not supposed to have it? i am not a fan of sushi, but for some reason, i've been craving sushi during my pregancy. i think it's psychological, a rebellion thing. (i've resisted.)

i've also been craving cigarettes since i got pregnant. another friend of mine says the same thing - we want them because we can't have them. i quit my social smoking habit last october and have obviously resisted the urge, but do find it amusing that i would crave something like that!

Better to be safe than sorry.

The Health Risks of Mercury Exposure
Mercury can damage many parts of the body, including the nervous system, the lungs, the kidneys, vision, and hearing. The seriousness of the risk depends upon how much mercury a person is exposed to. The risk is greater for fetuses and children than for adults.

Babies who are exposed to mercury while in the womb can suffer severe damage to the nervous system and may die. They may have brain damage, learning disabilities and hearing loss.

Eating Fish During Pregnancy
Eating too much fish containing mercury can be a health risk. The risk is especially serious for a fetus. For specific information, read the article Food Safety.

With my first child, I craved tuna. I had it several times a week for a while there, then when other foods started to appeal to me I cut back on the tuna. Ask your OB what they think but I personally am an "all things in moderation" type person.
