DC's best zip codes?

Anonymous
DH and I are moving into DC. What Zip codes should I be looking at? I have had 20016, 20008, 20015 suggested. Am I missing any? If you suggest another zip code, please include the neighborhood name, as I am still trying to figure stuff out. Thank you! PS- I'm looking for something in the 700-1 M range with hopefully an au pair suite. thanks!

Can you find a property in one of these zip codes large enough for an au pair suite for that price? I'd be really surprised!

Rowhouses in Woodley Park are in that range and most have a basement that can serve as an au pair suite.

You can't afford Georgetown proper at that budget (20007) but you can do Burleith or Glover Park.

20012 - Shepherd Park and/or Colonial Village

look online at 3637 van ness in north cleveland park (20008). it has a nice au pair suite downstairs and is for sale for $850K. just an example...

the van ness house is in 20008. not sure what was going on w/that smiley face.

A good example - but would you want to live on Van Ness? Between CT and WI it has a lot of Traffic.

Do you want to be near Metro? Do you want to be able to walk to shops, or do you want a more suburban feel?

I live in 20015 and she can def can get that at that price -- prices have come down and houses aren't going as fast.

OT but i think 700-1 M is a very wide range. when i was house hunting my range was only +- 50K.

OP here. Looking for somewhat near metro, and yes, we have a wide range. I didn't want to exclude any less expensive neighborhoods if they have nice housing stock and easy commutes. But we're obviously expecting to be in the upper end of that range.

20009 - Mt. Pleasant and some areas around Dupont Circle

20009 - Logan Circle/Dupont -- Whole Foods, metro. Lots of townhouses w/ basement apartments-suites.

That range is fine for a nice house in 20016 AU Park. Not a rowhouse, a SFH with yard and walkable to metro, grocery stores, etc. Many houses have finished basements which are used as au pair suites or guest suites. Definitely look at AU Park. Great for families & right in your range.
