What is the best elementary school in Montgomery County? What is the class size? |
By what measure? Bannockburn? Cold Springs? Carderock? These and others get top test scores. |
Top scores does not mean best school. |
Too subjective |
Ooh, ooh, mine, mine!!

Broad Acres
A school that has done amazing things with children who are up against amazing challenges. |
What is "best"? |
Kumon and other outside educational outfits by a long mile. |
No flames please. Just providing info. Here's the Maryland state ranking according to SchoolDigger which ONLY uses test scores. Of course that's only one measure of the quality of a school.
http://www.schooldigger.com/go/MD/schoolrank.aspx?pagetype=top10 These are some of the top MOCO schools by combined 3rd, 4th, 5th test scores for 2011-12. The one in your neighborhood where all of your children's little neighborhood friends go. |
I can tell you with some authority that it is NOT Woodacres. That school is way overcrowded and continues to increase in enrollment. It used to be great, but now is a MESS. Bullying, overcrowded classes, substitute teachers for most of the school year in several classes, cafeteria can not handle all the kids so lunch starts at 10:45 for some kids and 1:30 for others.... |
Where are all of these kids coming from? Woodacres is a stable community so there is no new construction. Does it have a special program where kids are bused in from outside the Woodacres boundary? |
I looked up that list. The one listed as North Potomac is actually Stone Mill, which is mine. It's drill and kill Tiger Mom, if that's your thing. It's not mine. So while scores are one measure, as the PP said, don't dismiss school culture. |
Chev Chs school culture: awful. Teach to test, brow-beating, shaming. Kids taught to fear authority rather than respect it (and question it respectfully). The best schools are where kids and community are happy. Look for that. |
I have seen this same post/poster multiple times. Obviously you had a bad experience but we are at Chevy Chase, and while there are things I don't like about MoCo schools (such as an emphasis on testing), I haven't experienced anything like this, and I don't have any reason to think things would be better at another school (like a different one we visited where they brought up test scores 2-3x during the tour). |
