Recommend your vacuum cleaner - thick carpet

My vacuum cleaner just died. Can anyone recommend a vacuum cleaner that is good on thick carpet and pet hair?

We went through three lower priced but still pricey vacuums that died on us before we finally invested in this one.

I'm going to second the Dyson. My husband and I were just mentioning today that we've had our dyson for 5 plus years and that prior to that we went through a vacuum a year b/c the dog hair would destroy it. It now cleans up after 2 dogs and 2 toddlers!

OP here - any recommendations besides the Dyson - I have had a bad experience with them and would prefer to go another route.

I like to Hoover Windtunnel. Carpet is decently thick and we have pet hair galore. It does a good job.
