How long to put up with poop everywhere?

Anonymous
I have a 3.5 year old DS with dev delays. He is verbal and has language to express poop and pee, although he confuses them sometimes. When we first started potty training it went reasonably well. He peed when placed on the potty and was eager to impress. We graduated from diapers to pull ups and sometimes went naked or used underwear also. This was over the summer. Now that time has gone on he is less interested in peeing in the potty (too busy playing) and poop training is going awful. He has only ever pooped in the potty once and now that we're still going on with pee training I'm getting poop on my floors, in underwear and in pull-ups that get removed and smeared in his bed because he gets that poop is yucky. His poop schedule is not consistent enough to put him on the toilet at a given time a day. I have no ideas as to how to move him to anticipating and I'm getting sick to death of cleaning up shit on a daily basis. Help!

Ditch the pull ups. I take my kid to the potty about every 2.5 to 3 hours. He protests a lot. Usually he just pees. Sometimes I hit the timing right and he poops.

He will still often poop in his underwear--maybe once a week.

OP here. Everybody says that but DS often shows no signs of being uncomfortable with poop in his underwear. Isn't the idea behind ditching pull-ups that the kid gets grossed out or otherwise bothered?

Pull ups are just a great money suck. I also think confusing for kids as to what they "feel" since they're so absorbent.

(My kid will still poop in his pants at least once a week. He usually doesn't say anything but I see him in that half-stand-squat position. I don't know if he's exactly grossed out by it, but he understand the concept of the potty and where the poop should go.)

OP, my Ds with dev delays was just not ready for potty training at 3.5. At 4 he was ready for pee training, and did so in one day, but it took him til nearly 5 to be poop trained. By 4, he was very consistent and just pooped in a diaper when he went down for his nap, but he wasn't ready to do it in the potty til he was good and ready. Kind of like walking, talking, eating, etc. Only when he was good and ready, and in all cases, that was a good 2 years after I thought he should be ready
