Regardless of the outcome financially for Nat, she needs to stand on her own two feet (& wallet) and learn to live on her dime. Yeah she may get alimony, but child support is for the girls for necessities, NOT for Nat to spend on crafts and nail polish and garbage. Or for Nat to spend on herself.

i'll never forget when my ex-boss was awarded $5k/month in child support and she called her new husband and told him they would be using some of that money to redo their kitchen

how does alimony work? they were only married 8 (i think?) years and she did go to school, has a degree and worked for a short period before they had kids, so it seems she did plan to have some sort of career at least until they started a family. is there some sort of formula as to how long she'll receive alimony?

varies state to state, and in a large part is determined by the judge after both sides present their case...I don't think there are any set rules for determining how much will be allotted, just general guidelines.
