Travis and Taylor

She will never please some of you, and in this regard (a relationship) she doesn't have to please any of you, only herself and the person she's in a relationship with. Even my mother for crying out loud said "she's just trying to be normal while everyone else around her isn't." She hid her relationship for 6 years. She's simply not hiding anymore.

lol, the Swifties are becoming unhinged because people's eyes can see clear as day how fake this is. Sorry, you can't gaslight and bully people to believe fake is authentic. We have eyes, we have intuition, and we have instincts. We know fake when we see it.

What does she gain from this? She needs literally nothing in her life that anyone can give her, other than a relationship. She can't buy that, and that's why I think this is real.

Eh, that's not the mentality of someone like Taylor Swift.

One thing about people who are extremely successful is that there is always more, there's always another goal or another level they can reach. I think the Kelce relationship has helped her. It helped her turn the page on Alwyn and Healy, which were both somewhat negative gossip stories for her (Alwyn less so but it was still viewed as a "failed relationship"). I think the timing of her relationship with Kelce helped her get selected for Time's person of the year feature, which is the kind of "honor" that people at this level can actually be quite obsessive about.

After a relationship with a reclusive British guy, and then a short-lived fling with someone who turned out to be kind of a $hitheel, what better way to burnish her image as America's Success Barbie than to have a very public relationship with a superstar athlete. And not just any athlete, but a football player. After all, the NFL is the Taylor Swift of American sports -- no matter what people say about it or how some haters complain, it just gets more and more popular. It's a juggernaut. From Taylor's perspective, the appeal of uniting multiple extremely successful brands and seeing how it explodes the internet, is probably fun. If you don't think Taylor knows how her her relationship with Kelce has boosted sales of his jersey, interest in the Chiefs and football generally, even potentially ad dollars for the NFL (did the league flex more Chiefs games to prime time knowing Taylor would drive interest? Did advertisers pay extra to be positioned next to bumpers featuring Taylor? I'd be curious to know), you're crazy. She knows. People at this level know and they care.

You think someone becomes Taylor Swift at this level and things "well, that was fun, I've done it all -- time to ride off into the sunset with a hunk." No way. She's still climbing. She wants to know how high she can get and she's not done yet.

I disagree 10000% that she needed Travis Kelce to get Time Magazine's Person of the Year. She achieved billionaire status through a ridiculously, ongoing successful worldwide tour and a movie, etc. She needed no one to get her there, just like all of her other achievements. They are achieved on her own, and it's her coattails people are riding, not the other way around (as you noted yourself above). I can see your point that she wanted to rebound from the douche she dated after Joe Alwyn, who I know nothing about other than his ties to her, but we all rebound from relationships. This is nothing but human behavior. I don't think she's done climbing, either. But if anyone is riding off with anyone, it's him with her, not the other way around. I just don't see her riding on anyone's coattails for anything.

You misunderstand me. I don't think she needed Travis Kelce to get Person of the Year. She doesn't "need" anyone.

I'm saying she is using Kelce and this "relationship" to accomplish certain publicity goals, namely to turn coverage of her love life from a negative to a positive, give her ample opportunities to be seen interacting with "regular people" (i.e. Kelce's family and friends) which make her seem more relatable and down to earth, as well as to flex the muscle of her marketing power in a new arena (pro sports).

It's not that she was like "oh no if I don't become this football players girlfriend, no one will think I'm successful." She's a marketing genius. Before the Kelce relationship, she was widely lauded as an enormous creative and financial success BUT had a reputation for dating "bad" guys. I think the Healy/Ice Spice incident was a problem for her (she went to great lengths to correct it) and she wanted to turn the page on that story. She has used Kelce to do that, quite successfully.

She's in charge. That doesn't mean the relationship is real and not a publicity stunt.

This has generated record-breaking female viewers and impressions for NFL among target (prime) female audience, to the tune of over $330 million thus far. You don't think Swift and her ruthless dad are getting a piece? NFL generates over $20 billion a year. NFL also just randomly scored the rights to her music to use on socials and TV? Come on, everyone is in on this charade. The public is being duped.

That's a ludicrous tweet. Let's rewrite it, shall we?
Taylor Swift net worth in April of 2023, before she embarked on the U.S. leg of a record-breaking stadium tour: $570 million

Taylor Swift net worth in January of 2024, after record-breaking stadium tour, including South American dates: $1.1 billion

PP, thank you for asking. I am THRILLED at getting to share this with you.

So while Taylor was linked to Healy in the spring of 2023, it came out that he'd been on a podcast (The Adam Friedland Show) where he and the host had said some disparaging, racist things about Ice Spice (they were REALLY bad, they did mock Chinese and Hawaiian accents, made fun of her body, and questioned her ethnicity). When this blew up and Healy was linked to Taylor romantically, this was obviously a very bad look just as her Eras tour was kicking off.

Taylor and Healy broke things off and the timing makes it seem pretty clearly that it was linked to this stuff with Ice Spice. Backing that up is the fact that Taylor wound up bringing Ice Spice on tour as one of her guest acts and performing with her. It seems like Taylor handled the whole thing pretty well, honestly, but from a PR standpoint, it was definitely a problem for Taylor to be linked with someone who is generally viewed as a jerk, and the fact that he said this blatantly racist stuff on a podcast (so like knowing it was being recorded and people would hear it) raises some questions about her judgment, especially regarding men (and especially when you know that Taylor had been linked to Healy before, like a decade before, so this was a reunion of sorts after her Joe Alwyn breakup, not a new relationship).

Anyway, this was actually a big story in Swiftie-land back in the spring/summer but the Kelce relationship has completely eclipsed it. It's also interesting to me that a 6 month relationship with Kelce seems to be generating about a billion times more interest and fan "shipping" than the 6 YEARS she was with Alwyn, who was notoriously disinterested in making their relationship public. Obviously Kelce is the opposite of that.

DP but I just want to say that this fan/hater dynamic you are trying to impose sucks. Let there be nuance. Some of us root for Taylor Swift as a business woman and artist, like her music, and also think this relationship is a publicity stunt and that the way it's been carried out feels like a grift.

I contain multitudes, okay? I don't hate Taylor Swift but that doesn't mean I think everything she does is awesome. I can enjoy her music and appreciate her financial success and still criticize some stuff she does when it offends my sensibility. Post like yours turn this into a stupid back-and-forth beefing contest when a lot of us just want to *discuss* a subject that is interesting and varied and about which there can be MANY valid opinions.

Putting down women with a bunch of misogynist comments because you think they are putting down a woman you like is crazy. We can have this conversation without being jerks to each other.

I actually do believe there's a decent chance they get married and she has a baby at the end of her tour. If you watch her interact with kids who are fans, she seems like a sweet person who genuinely likes kids. Her BFF Blake Lively is a mom of four that she is close with. Travis could retire from football and want the same life as his brother. This situation reminds me of the Sex and the City line about men who are ready to get married being taxi cabs with their light on - they pick up the next eligible rider. I see that for both of them here.

This is how I see it, too, PP.

Yeah, none of her increase in wealth had anything to do with the little tour and movie she had going on. Nothing. It's all Travis making her richer.

I think she'll have a kid eventually, but not with this guy. I believe their relationship is real, but I doubt he's the kind of guy she wants to tether herself to for the rest of her life by having a kid with him.
