Infant wheezing, freaking me out

Anonymous
My four week old will suddenly wheeze and sound really scary for a few seconds, then be okay. She is eating, sleeping, gaining weight, no signs of illness. But the wheezing is disturbing. I read that this is sometimes normal in infants. More than one source seems to confirm this.

BUT, does this warrant a trip to the ped? Anyone else have a child exhibit this?

I would at least call the pediatrician's office--a nurse should be able to tell you whether this warrants a visit or not.

Go to your pediatrician.

Call the dr....four weeks old? ALWAYS call the dr. Good luck!

Always trust your gut - especially with the wee ones. Probably fine, but much better to be on the safe side. Call the ped.

We had the same thing happen. When I called the ped they told me to bring the baby in, which they alwasy do at this age for anything, and it turned out to be nothing. Apparently DS was finding his voice! Still, it's best to be sure and go to the doc.

Same with us. Exactly the same. Take your child in, but here's what happened with us: It was absolutely nothing. She's 7 months now and thriving. Hope the same works out for you! Ours was during non-allergy season, so on of the first things you'll have to evaluate if it is allergy-related...but I hear you, I would freak out, always thought she was choking (and she never was)....she outgrew it in about 3 weeks. good luck!

Is your newborn sneezing a lot too?

I know brand new newborns wheeze and sneeze to try and clear out their lungs, but not sure if this is the case considering your baby is not fresh out of the oven and it seems like it has suddenly occurred.

Does it seem like it is apnea (like sleep apnea, but while baby is awake - almost like forgetting to inhale)?

Just a thought...

OP here- talked to a nurse at the ped's office. She told me this is normal (too much to detail here, but she doesn't have other signs that we should be alarmed about). Also talked to my mom, who said I did the exact same thing.

I am still taking her into the doctor's office on Monday.
