Transverse at 38 weeks?

Anonymous
So at my OB appointment today (38 weeks) my doctor seemed surprise that baby had changed position since last week and is now transverse (!!) He seemed relatively confident that since he a) has enough room to move around and b) is still obviously very active he will turn around again in time for delivery, but I'm a bit freaked now that he won't and I'll be in for a c-section.

Anyone had this happen? Baby turning at the last minute? Did they by any chance turn back? TIA

Check out spinningbabies.com for optimal positioning exercises. I think babies can turn until they are fully engaged in the pelvis, so of course there's a chance that s/he will turn back. You could also look into getting some chiro adjustments (look for someone who specializes in the Webster technique, that's for breech babies but I think the process is similar for transverse babies too, in any case a chiro who knows Websters would be accustomed to working with pregnant women). You can also ask your doctor about doing a version. Best of luck to you!

My baby was transverse, and turned---to full breech! I ended up delivering at 37 1/2 weeks due to preeclampsia and had a c-section.

When I asked my Ob-Gyn about doing a version, she was hesitant because she had a prior patient who considered a version--but whose baby had the cord wrapped around her neck 4 times. My doctor said she "shuddered to think if we did turn her, what could have happened during delivery" because even a c-section was difficult with that short of a cord.

Just to help you make your decision.

I tried turning my baby by swimming (dive to the deep end bottom of the pool, pressure can turn the baby) and putting headphones low on my pelvis. Didn't work for me, but has worked for some, I hear.

Good luck!

My now 13-month old suddenly turned breech at 38 weeks (confirmed by u/sound), after weeks of having been in the perfect position (again, this had been confirmed by u/sounds at every office visit leading up to this). I was scheduled to be induced 3 days later anyway, as he was estimated to be a large baby (and those u/sounds were correct!). On the morning of the induction the u/sound showed that he had turned back into the perfect position! I never even noticed him turning breech and back again, and he was a large baby and I'm pretty small, so I guess anything can still happen for you. If he hadn't turned again, I would have quite happily opted for the C-section, as I was more worried about the cord being wrapped around his neck. Good luck - it'll all be fine!
