National Xmas Tree Lighting Ceremony- experience?

Has anyone been to the National Tree Lighting Ceremony held at the whitehouse lawn? We got tickets and were wondering what it was like to take a young child to the event? Our son is 3.5 yrs old and we're wondering if others have taken their young kid(s) to this event and what their experience was with waiting around for the event to begin if you're in the "standing room" section of the event? I know we can bring a stroller so our son could sit but I'm wondering if we'll be tightly packed in standing around/sitting for over an hour for the event to begin or if there's room for the kids to kinda move around and get their energy out while they're waiting? Any insights or tips would be appreciated.
