Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS)
Those people are talking about long bus rides. That's relatable. Losing $0.2 million of your $1 million house that you bought for $100k is not something people are going to be super sympathetic about. |
I get that you don't care if people lose a significant portion of their home's value. They probably do. The question is whether Taylor/BOE and probably the county board would care. |
They should not. They should care about long bus rides. Caring just about property values is promoting segregation. |
+1 It's one thing to have a different view and another to make fun of older folks who will take a large hit. No need to do that. I personally don't think MCPS should make decisions to keep certain house in certain HS due to house prices going up or down, but everyone has equal right to advocate whats best for them and no need to be mean about it. Segregation is natural outcome and it's not hard to understand unless you are an extreme leftist. As long as it's not forced segregation( no way the case now) , talking about segragation is irrational. People will live wherever they can afford to live. Segregation will always happen automatically. MCPS can't fix it. Only way to make the situation some what better is possible by different housing policies by county and that's not the job of MCPS, MCPS job is to educate all kids as best as they can. That's about it. MCPS should make the best decision to balance eveyrthing wherever possible without bussing kids long distance. There is nothing more in it to be honest. Personally I like the idea of RM parent who modified option 4 to balance everything. I live the Viers Mill and happy to go to WJ. Yes, my property values will likely go up, but that's not the main reason for me. i would be fine to go to Woodward as well, but both schools are less than a mile from each other so distance is not an issue. - Viers Mill parent |
so the game is just to average out test scores, not help struggling children. |
I know that they care. I also care when my stocks go down but I don't expect the government to fix that. I do expect them to care about the market as whole, but not my particular stocks. I knew it was risky when I bought them. |
if you don't think stock owners want specific government policies to help their stock prices, then I've got a bridge to sell you. |
| I wonder if any of you have eve once given a single thought to the impact of redlining on Black communities. That impact continues today. Those property values are still depressed. This is not a temporary blip. This is decades of lost wealth building. |
I mean some do. I don't expect that and as a citizen I don't want the government to prioritize specific companies over the good of the nation. That is picking winners and :gasp: socialism. |
see upthread for a long discussion of this. |
| it's almost like there are no non-white people in any of the communities that will be bused far away. |
I'm talking to the people demanding that the government protect the property values in the areas that have benefited from redlining for decades |
Not true. |
That's a leap. I am completely sympathetic to anyone concerned about long bus rides, and have said so, though you keep pretending not to notice. I am not sympathetic to anyone who is demanding MCPS protect their property values. Property values that have benefited and continue to benefit from historical racial discrimination. |
what about non-white people wanting to protect their property values? |
