Hi, I am trying to find a neighborhood for our family. We want to be within walking distance of a metro with a foreign language immersion school starting at the elementary level. We also want to be in the same neighborhood for the best high school. Is that Yorktown? From what I see the Key and Yorktown districts are different. Is there a neighborhood for both? Thanks in advance for any other school ideas. |
There have been multiple posts on this recently and people mostly say the same thing - all the schools in Arlington are excellent. Some are more diverse than others, some are bigger than others, but they are all really good. And it is really subjective to say what is "the best". IF you are going by test scores alone, yes, Yorktown would probably come out on top. However, Yorktown is also the least diverse of the 3 high schools. Washington-Lee is also excellent and is brand new and has the IB (International Baccalureate) program, and Wakefield (S. Arlington) is also good. I believe Key feeds into Washington-Lee and I believe the neighborhoods that feed into Key are Lyon Village, Courthouse, Clarendon and Rosslyn. Lyon Village is a great neighborhood with beautiful houses. It is walking distance to Courthouse metro. However, because of all that, houses are very expensive and rarely come on the market. When they do, they usually go very fast. Courthouse/Clarendon has its share of nice houses and neighborhoods, although it does have a more urban feel. Rosslyn has more townhouses and apartments. I believe the zips for Key would be 22201 and 22209. Most of Yorktown is 22207 and 22205, but parts of those zips also feed into Washington Lee. My advice would be to drive around and look at neighborhoods and then go from there. Or contact a realtor and let them know what schools you want to feed into. Good luck!

The other dual immersion elementary school in Arlington is Claremont. Several of the 22205 neighborhoods feed into Yorktown and Claremont is the immerson school for those neigborhood. Claremont is over by Shirlington (South Arlington). |
Some 22207 neighborhoods feed into Claremont as well. Basically, anyone in the Nottingham or Tuckahoe districts would go to Claremont if they want immersion education for their kids -- it's a great school! |
At one point, there was a slice of Courthouse (Courthouse Hill development, for example) that fed into Jamestown/Wmsbg/Yorktown. Being in the Jamestown area means you can also go to Key (Spanish immersion), Science Focus, or Taylor.
I agree, though, the Yorktown is not necessarily the best high school in Arlington. Not that it isn't good, just that another school may be a better fit for your family. |
