My DD (6) has the most horrible dry skin- despite daily moisturizing with thick cream, I just can't get a handle on it. She's so itchy that she scratches herself in her sleep til she bleeds.
We've tried Eucerin, Vanicream, California baby, and just about everything else I could think of. Any suggestions for a different cream, a moisturizing routine, anything? Also, would some kind of dietary supplements or vitamins help this? |
| A warm bath with several tablespoons of baby oil a couple of times per week helped me when I was a kid. |
| Try coconut oil straight out of the jar (yep, the kind from the cooking oil aisle). It has worked miracles on my skin. |

I have extremely dry skin in winter. Here's what I do:
1) Get a good humidifier and turn it on at least an hour before bedtime. I've found the invisible cool mist type are the best. Buy a case of filters and don't let water sit in it ever to avoid mold. 2) Do not use soap. For years I used Dove but even that dries me out now. I use Eucerin calming body wash instead and it works great. 3) Baths should not be hot. Use the coolest temperature that doesn't feel cold to dd. Moisturize immediately after bath. 4) When the skin i actively itchy at bedtime: rub the area lightly with water, moisturize with a heavy moisturizer, and wrap the body part with saran wrap. My dermatologist recommended this and it works wonders. Good luck. |
| Is she drinking enough water/juice/milk? Make sure she is staying hydrating during the day, that could be part of the reason!! |
| Aveeno works for me and my psoriasis prone kids. |
| I was going to recommend Eucerin but I see someone already has. 17:29 laid it out very well. But have you taken your daughter to a good dermatologist? There may be something more here to the problem like eczema, keratosis pilaris, seborreah |
| Is she eating enough saturated fat, cholesterol and omega-3s? I had terrible dry skin in winter until I started eating fatty fish, eggs and bacon for breakfast and using coconut oil in cooking. Remember, if her skin is dry, there's a good chance her other systems don't have what they need to develop normally, either. |
| My daughter had a huge problem with eczema for years. Tried her pediatrician then dermatologist and things stayed real bad even with steroid creams. I finally went to an allergy doctor. Dr. Economedies in Chevy Chase, MD. She discovered my daughter is highly allergic to many different types of chemicals things I don't think most doctors would usually test for. I had to change detergents, soaps, cleaners, etc. in the whole house to keep from exposing her to things. After I got the chemicals out of her environment, the eczema went away. |
| aquaphore. |
| aquaphor and/or cerave. also, consider cod liver oil. you can get it lemon-flavored now. (i'm proud to say that i gave the cod liver advice to my sister who has a daughter with exzema and it helped!) |
| A good brand to try is Elta |

I agree with the pp re: allergies
Also the humidifier-we keep ours on 24 hours a day My ds was waking up bleeding due to the itching as well, we found out he is allergic to a lot of things, oddly enough he stopped itching when we cut out gluten. Our Ped says it doesn't make sense sciencitiflcally but it seems to come back whenever we re-introduce a lot of gluten in his diet. Now we aren't militant about it, we just switched him out to GF pasta and breads (he didn't like bread much before) and GF cereals like Chex or rice crispies Good luck, it's awful seeing them so uncomfortable |
Yep, try giving 1 to 3 GRAMS of EPA/ DHA fish oil. Helped our DD. |

Agree with Omega-3s.
Also, I have always used lanolin after baths on DD. Aquafor is a petroleum product. |
