Register at http://spedsurvey.gmu.edu/snap/2012/aba_workshops/dec8_toilet_training/ WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and related developmental disorders often experience difficulty with toilet training. This workshop provides information on determining readiness, developing a routine, habit training, overcoming fear, communicating the need to use the toilet, modeling and pre-teaching to support success. Learning Objectives: ?? Understand the importance of toilet learning as an Activity of Daily Living (ADL) ?? Identify toilet learning problems from a child’s perspective ?? Determine readiness for toilet training ?? Understand the role of data collection and task analysis in supporting toilet learning ?? Identify strategies to support successful toilet learning ?? Develop a child-centered toileting routine ABOUT THE PRESENTERS Charlotte Crane, M.Ed., BCBA Charlotte (Char) Crane has been an Autism Consulting Teacher for Loudoun County Public Schools for the past 14 years. She is also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Char has served children, adolescents and adults on the Autism Spectrum for over 30 years. Prior to coming to LCPS, she worked as a teacher for students with autism for seven years, and then as a statewide consultant for the Virginia Autism Resource Center for 13 years. Char has served an adjunct professor for George Mason University and the University of Virginia, teaching graduate courses in autism and applied behavior analysis. She served on the Virginia Autism Council for over 2 years and is currently serving on the Board of Commonwealth Autism Service. Char and Jane continue to focus on combining their knowledge and experience to develop educational presentations that focus on building skills and increasing independence for children, while managing behaviors that may interfere with learning. Jane Dettra MS,OTR/L Jane Dettra graduated from Shenandoah University in 2000. She has worked as an Occupational Therapist for Loudoun County Public schools for 12 years. Jane has worked in the Early Childhood Special Education Autism classrooms for 11 years. Jane’s undergraduate degree from Marymount University was in Health and Nutrition. She has presented at the state and national levels and served on the Virginia Occupational Therapy Association (VOTA) Board. Jane currently serves on Loudoun County’s Committee for Inclusive Placement Options for Preschoolers (IPOP). In addition, Jane works with Loudoun County’s Child Find Center where she is part of a multidisciplinary team that screens children who are eligible for early intervention and/or transitioning into early childhood services that may need occupational therapy evaluations. Jane Dettra and Char Crane continue to focus on combining their knowledge to develop educational presentations that focus on building skills and increasing independence for children, while managing behaviors that may interfere with learning.
