risk of multiples at age 40 with injectibles?

Anonymous
I'm TTC #2, using injectibles, trigger, and IUI (no fertility issues, just age issues). I'm 40, and my 3-day FSH has ranged from 8-10 over the last several cycles. I know there is a real risk of multiples using these drugs, but I'm not sure those statistics apply to women >40. Anyone conceive twins or more this way, at this age?

Unfortunately, no. I wish I had them be more aggressive.

I was 40 with the same process but a higher FSH - I had four mature follicles on the cycle that I got pg with my dc. Four follicles and one baby.

I asked my Dr. if the rate for muliples were high in the age group of 38 and over and she said that she usually gets singletons when he patients have this treatment.

Good Luck!

I just went trough the same thing, I produced 4 follicules and only one baby. I'm also 40.

OP here, thanks, this is reassuring -- though I suppose anyone with twins or more would likely be far too busy to post in this forum!

I had similar FSH. Was 39 -- twins.

OP here... thanks for sharing, PP, we'll see what happens. Looks like I have something like 8-10 follies and will probably trigger on Friday. The doc is hoping for 4-5 mature follies. I'll take twins over no success any day.

anyone conceive via IUI with injectibles with just one or two mature follicles? in order words, do you need at least 3 or 4 to be successful?

PP twin mom here. I'm pretty sure I had 2 mature follicles and 2 borderline.

Good luck, OP. Let us know how it works out. Rooting for ya.

I think the age/multiples link doesn't really apply in this case. With injectibles, they monitor you pretty closely and adjust your dosage, so I think the probability of multiples is fairly consistent across various ages. In addition if you have a lot of follies (don't know what the break point is), they will change your IUI cycle to and IVF cycle if they believe the chance for higher older multiples is too great. This happened to a relative of ours. She was doing an IUI cycle with injectibles, but responded so well that they switch the cycle to IVF so that they could limit the number of embryos transferred back. Luckily the cycle was a success and she has a baby girl.
